That he is worth it now, and hopefully for all 3 years. He is a legend and i would love to see him win the cup!

I think like both him and Patty are perfect candidates for one year bonus laden contract so sharks have more capspace to better the team.

makes sense

i'm more of a 2 yr @ $6m

but i guess he deserves that 3rd yr (job security) for all he's done

What would every one say if thornton signed a 3 year 6.5 million a year contract this summer? With the sharks.

I'd say signing him after the expansion draft and so close to free agency cost us a hometown discount. 19.5 M over three years is a bit higher than I expect it to take. My guess is we will do another three year deal totaling 17M (6+6+5 or 5.66M/year).

For those saying we should do 1/year incentive laden deals, I can't see us doing that for Thornton and Marleau. Puts too many variables in to calculating the future year's cap. I could see us doing it for one, mostly Marleau, just not both.

35+ contracts should really only be one year due to the cap implications but I have a hard time seeing Thornton retiring early. 1 year would be better but 3 years could work and the AAV is fine regardless. He's still an amazing player.

He has a youngish family, I wouldn't be surprised if he's close to being done. Don't think a 3 year contract is going to happen

Taking one year deals like Selänne could work well with him. When he feels he is done, then there's no real setback for the club (unlike Datsyuk for example).

Point and laugh

Go one year at a time from now on

Agreed. He'll be 38 when his next contract takes effect... little chance someone signs him to a 3x6.5m contract. 2 years at 4-6m? Absolutely. Heck I could even see him signing 3 years at a lowish cap hit (4-5m). But there's little chance someone signs him to 3 years at 6.5m. The smartest thing for both parties (assuming JT isn't looking to max out his cash) is to sign 1 yr deals that pay fair value. That could be 6.5m for next season and less afterwards.

3 years from now even if thornton declines rapidly what will be the worst he will be? a 40-50 point 3rd line powerplay specialist?

Datsyuk situation only happened because he wanted to play in the KHL. Thornton isn't going to want to play in another league when he finishes his NHL career.

4 years, 5.5m. The guy is a true leader and the face of the franchise. These last career contracts are trending in this direction. Under contract until late 30's even 40, and under market value per year.

Not necessarily true. His wife is Swiss and he's mentioned finishing out his career in the NLA at one point or another.

For guys his age, I think the only thing that makes sense is 1-year deals. Players sometime fall off a cliff, or have nagging injuries that kill their efficiency (without being on the LTIR either).

Id roll over laughing. Only because those 35+ contracts are serious killers. Best to offer a lower AAV for 2 years than you would on a 1 year.
Or do the Selanne, take average salary and lots of bonuses in the contract.
Jumbo & Patty re-sign 1 year deals, Patty at 3 salary and Jumbo at 5, each with 2.5 million in possible bonuses, say 500K to GP, Goals scored, points, with 1m signing bonus.
4m to Marleau on day 1 of his contract and 6 to Jumbo. Sharks continue going for it.

Oh I didn't know that.

Jumbo will be able to get term if he wants it. Guy is hilariously underrated on this site.

I hope he's willing to sign a 1-year deal. Bc he's over 35, you can't get rid of his cap hit if he retires or is bought out. I don't forsee him declining rapidly in the next couple of years but you never know.

He could force a longer deal if he wants one. I can't see the Sharks walking away from him if he wants a 3-year deal, but I'd hope it would be for a lower cap than in the OP to reflect the risk of declining play and also the problems under the CBA for over-35 contracts.

Yes, that happens to great players like Marleau, sure. Not to superstars like Joe Thornton. I would happily sign him to a three year deal.
