It's a long road to the NHL. This time last year we were marvelling at what a steal Jacob Julien looked like, but he's come back down to earth this season.

I'm not saying that will be the case for Walton, and also not saying I'm giving up on Julien. They are totally different players. Just saying it's a long road with lots of ups and downs still to come.

Brayden Yager is still our clear #1 forward prospect IMO, based on a long track record of success at every level, but that can always change.
Julien was producing, but has never really showed dynamic skill. He was 4th on his team in points last season. Walton has much better skills and is the dominant offensive player on his team.

I'm not ready to go that far. Wait'll we see Yager at the WJC and back in Jr on a better team. Hard to judge Lambert this year with the Moose being such a mess but I think Yager is our more likely future 2C.

Walton is in a cluster of players that look very promising but still too far away to rank with certainty. Lambert is not so far away but I lump him in with Walton, HE and possibly a few others behind Salo, Yager and Chibs.
As a reminder. The steal of the draft…

Why Walton Is a Steal

Walton checks in at 117th on NHL Central Scouting’s Final Rankings. While a couple other outlets have him ranked, he is not getting as much attention as he should be getting for someone who could go late in the draft.

Walton is exactly the kind of player you gamble on late in the draft. Besides already being 6-foot-5, he’s over 200 pounds and is not done growing into his frame given that he had his 18th birthday in April. He can play both center and on the wing. But for someone with his size, he can skate and is a good playmaker.

I’ve always liked the Scouching Report.
They were right again.

From June:
The Scouching Report seems to have the ear of the Jets as well.

He had these Jets pucks ranked really high.

Kevin He at #79
Freij at #11
Kieran Walton at #49.

He also had Luke Misa at #20. Too bad we missed him.

Its funny. If you look back on some of the high picks who busted you find more than a fair share of big guys who hadn't shown a lot of skill by draft day. Looking back, they were obviously drafted for their size. Then we have this guy who is 6'6", 215 lbs by his 18th b'day and who had show some skill. Not jaw dropping skill. But not bad. And he goes 187th OA.

Chevy should be chastised for not taking him in the 5th rd.

Its still not likely but can you imagine if he makes it as a top 6 C? That size down the middle could be something to see. Unlikely, yes, but it could happen.

I know Jack Ivankovic’s dad Frank really well. He is a higher up with Molson and we do a golf junket with them every second year. I knew his kid played hockey but I didn’t know he was making Canada’s World junior team type player. Not surprising since Frank is a very cool guy and he obviously didn’t brag about it a few months ago when we were hanging together.

Gives me something to watch if he gets into a game.
