Who is Stafford better than of Stempniak, Teravinen, Di Guiseppe, or Aho? He just isn't an upgrade anywhere in the lineup for that cost.

You're right. It's not good for Carolina.

But calling Stafford 'fringe' is thoughtless hyperbole.

Call him a shallow, one note player. Call him a pending UFA. Call him questionable in his own zone. Call him inconsistent. Call him enigmatic, for all I care.

Don't call him fringe, though, because he consistently scores at top-6 rates.

Stempniak is a better player right now though, and on a cheaper contract, and historically a lot more durable than Stafford.

The other two guys are basically a wash.
