Injury Report: Jets health in the playoffs

If it's his fibula, then it's not a re-aggravation of an existing injury - bones usually heal, and that's that. Even though the fibula is non-weight bearing, it would go through the same 4-8 week healing period as any other bone... and Nik didn't miss that much time IIRC

I'm concerned that it might be a high ankle sprain... that might explain the walking boot and the timeline. Those can be annoyingly slow to heal and are often prone to re-aggravation

You don't typically walk around in a walking boot for a fractured fibula, unless perhaps it's a chip on the medial malleolus.

Regardless, being in a walking boot likely means a substantial injury and a longer recovery time than anyone would like to see.

You mean lateral malleolus (if you’re referencing the fib)

Walking boots can also be for comfort and protection. If he’s in a long boot and not using crutches I take that as a more positive sign myself

I broke my tibia and fibula in half a few years back. Long recovery to mend them but I had to walk around in a boot for a few weeks when my leg was almost at the point to where I could walk on it. The fact he is walking on it now means it is somewhat close to weight bearing with no chance of another break.

That's if it is even a break and not some lesser injury...

Great player, but made of glass. I love Ehlers, and we need him, but if he has a broken tibia, I think at least 6 weeks, but 4 would be great
Hairline # to tib or fib can heal in 5 wk, Greenstick #’s take 6 wks avg.
Hope it’s just a fibula hairline or soft tissue. Soft tissue can form scar in 28-40 days.
I just avulsed my Peroneus tertius (useless little buggsr) and my calf was healed in 10 days. I treated myself with ultrasound. Don’t report me eh!

Right. I think someone mentioned a fractured tibia, which was why I had focused on the medial side, despite my glitch in the post above.

I know people are saying "rest him up and take a bit longer" but I am firmly in the camp to get him in starting lineup as soon as he is cleared, it will take him some time to get back to game pace and timing so it's not like he is going to be all ready to go the first game you need him. So holding him back till there is a loss is not a good plan to me. The earlier he is in the better the chance of him being at game pace for critical games where you truly need him.

Get him in the lineup, maybe start him on the 4th line to manage his minutes plus the PP time and slowly promote him up the lineup.

It wouldn't really change the timeline if it's a healing broken bone and hes able to put his body weight on the foot

It could also be a good sign that he doesn't travel if there's specific rehab involved that he needs to attend at home
all we actually know is it was said to be a re-aggravation of the previous injury that kept him out 2 games, the broken bone hasn't actually been confirmed and is just a rumor

Agreed

That's why i said "if it's a broken bone"

Even if it's not a broken bone but a separate injuries or multiple injuries compounded, there's a "typical" timeline to how the average body heals. It wouldn't really change those timelines, as Whileee aluded to

the thing is we don't know what the injury actually is and all we got is week to week and in this case it would be around 2 weeks since he went down

To be with the guys, maybe? Can't see him being remotely ready this week.
That's what I was thinking. If I was looking for a silver lining, and Ehlers does end up making the trip, I'd hope that was a sign he didn't need to stay behind because of the injury (to rehab, or because they didn't want him to travel, etc.).

But he's not skating yet so don't see him available anytime soon.

A hairline fracture would be my guess, but pure speculation. There does seem to be enough evidence to suggest a significant lower leg injury.

Dear Nik,

Chondrocytes are your friends, as are myofibroblasts (the latter in small doses followed by a healthy round of apoptosis). Good ol' vitamin C derepresses their function(s), drink some OJ.

Please heal up soon, little viking.

Agreed, if it was just a tendon, muscle or tendon sheath wouldn’t one expect him to at least be trying a gentle skate? Or perhaps I am being a wee bit too premature there?
