Jersey, equipment alterations

I have a question. I have a jersey that is "XL" but it feels like just a large. It's got the heavy mesh style. I need it to be longer on the sleeves for it to fit okay with a hoody/equipment. Can a tailor do this or do I have to send it somewhere, or can it not be done?

It can be done, but you'll need some heavy mesh material the same colour as your jersey sleeves (unless you think a different colour wouldn't look that bad at the end of the sleeves).

If you don't have an old jersey the same colour you can check the thrift stores in your area for a jersey of that colour to use for material, or check a local fabric store.

It wouldn't be that hard of a task as a DIY project if you have a sewing machine you can use; even easier if you have access to a serger (or know someone who would be willing to do it for you with a sewing machine or serger).

Giving a shot at my question here...

I'm tired of my jersey(s) riding up above my hockey pants. My plan is to sew in a DIY fight strap. Anyone ever done this before? Probably go to Hobby Lobby or something. Thinking Velcro but wonder if that's strong enough.

Shouldn't be a problem, just take a look at some pictures how they usually are sewn into place (rectangle with an X inside) , then take a speedy stitcher and get going.

Measurements of mine for reference (see pic):

The "bar" containing the rectangle and the X stitch: 10cm x 5cm
The strap: 24cm (exposed, some additional material below the "bar") x 5cm
The strap when buttoned first position: 17cm
The strap when buttoned second position: 14cm
Material is nylon (the same as in the belts for hockey pants, just wider) with velcro added around the buttons, but i suppose just velcro would work too. Just join ~20cm of the smooth side (plus ~5cm for underneath the bar) with ~5cm of the tooth side (don't know the term in English, sorry) of some heavy duty velcro, and you should be fine.

so here's what i did. i re-purposed some do-it-yourself shin straps that i had made before. cut out a square piece of spare fabric. sewed that to my shin strap. then sewed that to the jersey.

from the image, you can see how close it is to the bottom of the jersey. this demonstrates how relatively small the jersey is (and hence why the jersey tended to ride up my back during a game.

after one game, it seemed to work okay. velcro stayed secure, and whenever i checked, the jersey never got stuck inside the back of my hockey pants.

Wow! Lol, those things must look like ponchos on you guys. It would depend on where it was big on you. Sleeves could be hemmed, as well as the bottom of the jersey to make it hang higher.

You can't really take something down that much without basically taking it apart, cutting everything down, and rebuilding the thing completely. You're just gonna have to tuck it in or something. Maybe hem the sleeves to a better length.

Could you trade with a teammate for one of the Mediums?

Wish I could, I'm the largest guy on my team so yeah, don't want to be a dbag and give a guy a head shorter than me a xl men sweater
