Will give Laval some help defensively, I hope they pair him with Mailloux. He's still just 22 so he has time to figure things out but I also railed against them calling him up so quickly and would have left him in Laval for at least a full year to work on his offensive game. I said I thought he would play in the NHL but that I never really believed in his offensive game, at NU he would skate the puck up ice into the zone but it almost never led to points.
I agredd with you. He should have been playing in Laval the last 2 seasons. He has the potantial to be a good # 6

Not in Montreal. He's clearly behind Guhle, Hutson and Xhekaj and everytime i've seen him on the right side he's been struggling. His value will be better by showing him at the NHL level. Pretty sure the plan is to trade him eventually.

which is total bull shit as the league was forced to change due to the salary cap era. If you listened to Ramage over the summer he talked about how they were forced due to injuries to rush these kids to the NHL and how this year they hoped not to have to do that or something to that effect.

Before the cap, it was standard to see 20 year olds to the the AHL for 2-3 years before sniffing the NHL.
But Struble did not turn pro at 20.

I would sent Doby as well if he's not playing tomorrow.

No team do that. It doesn't exist but in the mind of some fans. Star players very rarely spend more than half a year in the AHL. Elite player very rarely more than a year. Depth and middle six players will usually play a few games a year starting in their 2nd AHL season until they graduate. Outside of 4th line players NHL players cooking in the AHL for 3 years without seeing any NHL games is the exception more than the norm.

For example Protas and McMichael two guys some fans would say cooked in the AHL because they are 23 and are having their first successful year at the NHL level. But Protas at 19 spent a full year in the KHL and then after the KHL season played a few AHL games. After that when he was 20 he spent half the year in the AHL and half the year in the NHL. Then at 21 he spent 3/4 of the year in the NHL and a few games in the AHL. Then at 22 he spent a full year in the NHL as a depth player. Pretty much the same for McMichael at 19 he played a NHL games and the rest in the AHL. At 20 he played a full NHL season as a depth player. Then at 21 went back to the AHL but played 9 NHL games. Then at 22 played a depth role in a full NHL season again. Caps are doing the same with Handrix Lapierre. Played a full AHL season the first year but then a mix of some NHL games and some AHL games in his 2nd and 3rd season.

The cooking thing simply does not exist. Outside of the first year after that you want kids to have a glance at the NHL every year so you and himself can evaluate where he is at in his development. Only delusional fans think you can evaluate NHL readiness while playing in the AHL. You don't have to face McDavid in the AHL you can grossly dominate that league without being a NHL player at all. The AHL is probably the most overrated hockey league by fans. It's not that great.

Should the AHL allow more veterans then?

Those vets would be bad players. There's simply no way to replicate the NHL. The closest is the KHL when Russia is not at war. Players over the age of 23 in the AHL are almost all non NHL talent.

Here's the top 50 in the league and how many games they played in the AHL

MacKinnon 0
Draisaitl 6
Kucherov 17
Marner 0
McJesus 0
Rantanen 56
Connor 56
Eichel 0
Pasternak 28
Jack Hughes 0
Konecny 0
Necas 64
Shitfilet 10 playoffs games
Makar 0
Werenski 7
Bratt 0
Reinhart 3
Raymond 0
Marchenko 16
Quinton Hughes 0
Keller 0
Crosby 0
Nylander 75
Point 9
Kaprizov 0
Panarin 0
Hagel 67
Aho 0
Guentzel 44
Forsberg 47
Suzuki 1 playoffs game
Strome 50
Larkin 6 playoffs games
Duchene 0
Stutle 0
Kempe 104
Caufield 8
Grandlund 29
Kopitar 0
Shea Theodore 97
Hischier 0
Kyrou 64
Tavares 0
Vilardi 75
Robertson 60
Cooley 0
Morrissey 65
Rackell 48
Boldy 24
Monahan 0

The only players in the top 50 who kind of cooked in the AHL are Shea Theodore and Kempe. But even there 100 games it the equivalent and one full season and a half of another.

I'm not sure why it needs to be said over and over around here that coooking is not a thing when it comes to top players, WHat we need is top players. The depth can be adressed later. Testing our kids to see what they got is the right thing to do. If they got what it takes they wont need to cook.

The slow purge of once overhyped prospects by the Bozovin cheerleaders continues.

Glad to see
Nah. He's a solid young player and I think he'll have a good career.

The problem is there's nowhere to play him. He might as well be getting some ice while he sits. He'll be dealt sooner or later. He's too good to just sit on the bench.

But are we talking about elite players here, or about middle of the ground average players like Strubble? Your analysis by looking at the top 50 is in fact looking at about 1-2 players per teams. What about the 18 or so others? Are they irrelevant to the team? Of course not. Elite players may not need seasoning because of raw talent, but I would think that a truly successful team would groom their other young less talented bottom 6 players differently to become successful NHL players.

I wish I was young again and go through all 32 teams and make an analysis of that. I just don't have the energy anymore.

But Struble did not turn pro at 20.

which doesn't matter as going from the CHL or the NCAA to the NHL is going to be very tough for any non Crosby, McDavid, Bedard high end types that dominated at that level.

Unless we are to believe that since the salary cap era started, hockey development and players have improved so vastly that they no longer need to follow that model. Like I said, listen to Ramage's comments on it from over the summer if you can find it. Got to stop rushing these kids to the NHL.

I'm thinking Struble is more likely to stay than Savard. Savards ice time has been going down. I think Struble and Xhekaj play decently enough together.

Temporarily maybe, but a LD at RD is rarely ideal. I think he gets dealt for a RD.
