The confrimation was via a Dreger tweet (not unusual) not by the team.

If he signs they know he is healthy and get a huge bottom pair guy. If he is unhealthy they will be able to sign Robetson if that happens, run a 23 man roster, and still have some cap left so they can buy at the TDL.

No idea what is going there but they are able to do it. If Robertson doesn't sign they have a bunch of flexibility on what to do. Can always try some prospects there the first 10-15 games and make a move in season if it doesn't go well

Tweaked the title a little.

For the curious: regardless of whether or not Toronto and Hakanpaa actually signed a contract, no contract is official until it has been registered (filed) with and approved by the NHL.


p.s. I’d guess an actual contract was never signed. More likely they agreed to terms pending a passed physical or medical records from Hakanpaa.

Yes they are? All teams trying to contend make room for the kids when they are ready. We have a nice batch of forwards coming. One of them is good enough to make the team, maybe two

Robertson doesn't have to sign the contract though.

If he signs elsewhere, the Leafs can match the offer and keep him, which is exactly what he doesn't want.

Not only that, but if the Leafs match an offer sheet, then they can't trade the player for the rest of this season.

For Robertson, this is a Catch 22. If the contract dispute is over his destination, not money, then unless he gets a completely unrealistic offer there is no way out.

His only bargaining chip is to sit out -- unsigned -- which would only cut off his nose to spite his face. It certainly would not advance his career at this point.

Even if they walk away from Hakanpaa, the Leafs are probably still a bit short of a 23-player roster, until they accumulate just a bit more cap space to bring up a 23rd guy.

lol huh? They gave Knies NHL games because they had to to get him to sign a contract with us as he had UFA leverage. Same as with Abruzzeze the year before, who clearly is not an NHler but got 9 games after signing.
