The Bruins were not happy with Zach Sill’s hit from behind on Adam McQuaid that knocked the defenseman out of last night’s 3-2 loss to the Capitals. How long McQuaid will be out is not known.

At the 4:47 mark of the second period, Sill appeared to catch McQuaid between the 5 and the 4 on his back, driving his head into the glass. McQuaid laid motionless on the ice for a few seconds as Patrice Bergeron locked up with Sill, though no punches were thrown. After some time on his back while being tended to by the B’s medical staff, McQuaid was moved to a sitting position before eventually skating off, with some assistance. He went straight down the runway and did not return.

No penalty was called.

“Obviously, for me, there should have been a call there, but we’ll see how the league deems it. It was definitely a hit from behind in my book, but we’ll let the other people take care of it, as always,†said coach Claude Julien, who had no immediate update on McQuaid’s health.

Bergeron clearly did not like the hit.

“Yeah I thought it was a bad hit,†he said. “I mean it was one of those where it happens fast, and from my angle I guess it was a bad hit. There was no point, no need for (Sill) to hit him like that and definitely tough to see Adam go down as hard as he did.â€

What did Sill say to Bergeron in the scrum?

“He was just telling me, I guess, to get away. And he thought it was a good hit. But there was no way possible that he could really believe that,†Bergeron said.

On a later shift, it appeared Zac Rinaldo offered to fight Sill, but he continued skating to the Caps bench.

Washington coach Barry Trotz, referencing an earlier awkward hit into the boards by McQuaid on Sill on which the B’s blueliner had his legs accidentally taken out from under him, said he had no problem with either hit.

“Those are hockey hits,†Trotz said. “When I saw the hits, I couldn’t see the original hit (by McQuaid), but then when I saw replay, that was a hockey play. Unfortunately, McQuaid got hurt there, but that’s 100 percent a hockey play and that was absolutely the right call on that.â€

Sill was not made available for comment.

If this was done by a Bruin, it would have been the main topic on the sports newscast.

TSN had Marchand's hit and a vote system of whether he should be suspended. Wow! Brad was guilty before Player Safety had a chance to do a ruling.

TSN did not even mention Sill's hit or McQuaid's injury. Brutal.

NHL is becoming a joke. Sill's hit should be 5 game plus.
