I think it’s fair to ask the question because we may not want to hold the bag when Jake gets paid, but he does have 9 points in 8 games this season, two 40 goal seasons and a 36 in the last 5 + a 34 goal pace in the 56 game season and another 40 goal pace in 2019-2020. I say gave him and the team another month or two.

You can always make this trade for futures now and then reassess what's out there at the deadline. Get your Hornqvist if it's worth it for us.

A long term contract only makes sense if this team was younger and had an open contention window during his contract.

Riding to UFA only makes sense if the team is a contender this year.

Trade is the only correct option.

Jake has historically been pretty streaky, he'll score something like 7 goals in 9 games a few weeks from now and his statline will balance out.

Some team out there that thinks they're right on the cusp of taking the next step will pay big, and teams in that position likely only started seriously thinking about contending recently, so fleece 'em for their best prospect and a 1st rounder and run away laughing. -edit- Find a team that's been bad recently but is making strides to compete. They'll have some very highly regarded prospects in their system, and with this prospect cupboard, a blue chipper at literally any position would be a huge add.

A top-5 pick (their own) and someone else's 20-25th overall goes a long way toward putting a couple supporting pieces in place for the post-Sid era, which is only a bit over a season and a half away.
