Marlies' Gardiner has concussion symptoms

December 12, 2012, 2:31 pm - THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - The Toronto Marlies aren't taking any chances with standout defenceman Jake Gardiner.

The 22-year-old blue-liner did not skate with the AHL team Wednesday, still shaken following a big hit in a game Saturday against Rochester. Marlies coach Dallas Eakins says Gardiner is suffering symptoms consistent with a concussion, though the injury hasn't been labelled as such.

"He's got a bunch of issues in his neck and some headaches, so yes it could be symptomatic to a concussion or could be symptomatic to neck pain," Eakins said at practice.

Well at least they're starting to realize that it might be a neck issue instead of just a concussion issue by some of the misdiagnoses that have been going around since this concussion hysteria began. Better safe than sorry and hopefully it's not anything serious because we'll need him if there's hockey this season.

Added in Injury Report tag, Mess. Hope you don't mind.

tough sport, could also be a short career sport.
and the players are at fault in this lock out.
it could take a long time for the leafs to replace a player like gardiner.
owners a dime a dozen

He got rocked, but he shouldn't have been watching the puck as he knows he's a target.

Teams continuously have been taking runs at him.

When you are the teams best player you know you have a target on your back. Take him out and the team struggles.

Hopefully it isn't a concussion and he's good for the start of the NHL season, if there is one.

Well it says he's improving and the season won't start till January at the earliest, so I wouldn't say it's the end of the world just yet.

That looked like it hurt. Here's hoping the recovery time is quick with little side effects.

I said when the hit happened I thought his neck would be sore.

Remember neck injuries can sometimes present concussion symptoms.

Yup concussion = career over , trade bait anyone ?..... <- Sarcasm .

Yea just let him fully recover , no use playing him if he's not 100%.

Meh, sit him out and let him recover, no real need to rush him back to meaningless AHL duty.

Exactly. While there is little positive when an injury (especially the dreaded concussion) occurs, this couldn't have happened at a better time. If this season weren't locked out, this team needs all hands on deck to get ourselves out of the NHL cellar.

It's only been a few days since he got hit, and it didn't look like an awful, career ending hit or anything like that. Concussions are pretty common in hockey, if it was just a minor concussion he can sit out, let it heal, and be fine an healthy in the not too distant future. It's most the massive concussions that your really have to worry about. Too much doom and gloom in this thread, he'll likely be just fine. Also, as noted, he may not even be concussed, could be a neck injury.
