Speculation: Jake Gardiner cleared to play, will the Canes need to clear cap?

We were looking at a little less than $20m in cap space before he cleared. His buyout is only $1.5m through 2023-24. Worst case, our cap space is only around $17.5m to $18m.

We'll probably end up trading him, either to clear his cap to a team needing to reach the floor, or as a part of a bigger trade where it helps balance out salaries added/lost.

If they buy him out, they’d have around $22-23M in space. They have roughly $20M now with Gardiner’s $4M already taken into consideration.

I’d wager this is the last thing the Canes front office thought they’d have to deal with this summer. It’s certainly not ideal cap-wise. At worst, Gardiner is the 3rd pair LD next year or he’s bought out.

I tend to think a buyout is actually most likely since it’s not really that painful at just over $1M for next season and just under $1.5M the season following. They could end up trading him for another team’s problem contract, but then they’d still likely be stuck with dead cap.

Maybe, just maybe, there’s a team that’d be willing to take him on as part of a larger deal (cap dump) or as part of an effort to get a warm body with a short-term contract to ensure they hit the cap floor. I don’t see the Canes paying off a team in picks or young players to be rid of him, just not their M.O. He does seem like a throw-in for cap reasons in a Chychrun trade or similar type deal. ARZ would need another LD to as a Chychrun place-holder, just sayin…

He has, at times, played well for the Canes, but I can’t see him suiting up again in Raleigh.

I don’t see another team taking Gardiner who has missed so much time with his back issues.

There was a story a couple of days about Ferland contemplating a comeback. He’s not suffering from symptoms anymore which is good. But the guy did comeback a couple of times but never lasted that long and didn’t get hit hard when he returned. He just couldn’t handle lives games. So better for him to sit and not risk any complications.

cap dump to the canucks in a miller trade w/extension?
I think something like that makes sense if he's healthy and can actually play, but Canucks don't really make sense since he's a left defenceman who would be below OEL and Hughes on the depth chart, and would block a roster spot.

It could certainly happen though, if it facilitates a bigger trade.

I wonder if the Canes trade him to another team to get a serviceable player that the other team wanted to get rid of, but the buyout was not good. Like the Darling/Reimer deal. Florida took Darling because the buyout was cheaper. Maybe somebody does that with the Canes. I just don't see this organization buying someone out if there is a gamble to be made on a trash for trash trade that might make their trash into a diamond in the rough type of deal.

He’s certainly not going to start a bidding war, but I think it’s been proven over and over again that it’s not really that hard to trade bad contracts, especially those with only 1 yr left. I’m not saying that Gardiner will command any sort of decent return, but I don’t really think it’d be that hard to move him for another team’s similar problem player, to a team needing some cap to hit the floor or potentially, if he has issues and needs to go back to LTIR, a team like Vegas or Tampa, who always seem to figure out how to make that sort of situation work to their advantage cap-wise.

Conversely, if he comes into camp and finds out he can’t play, the Canes will just put him back on LTIR and problem solved. I don’t think it comes to that though. I personally see him being bought out.

Possible.

I just think the buyout and the extra $2M or so in space that would clear this year would be more helpful than taking that sort of gamble. It is true that the Cabes have been loath to go down the buy out path though.

Pickering, Ontario
Freddy and Gardiner reunited at last.
Somewhere Jake Debrusk is reminiscing about the good old times where Jake and Fred teamed up to allow one of the most hideous series winning goals maybe ever.

Still do like Jake quite a bit despite the failures. Wish he recovers and gets another nice deal after thus

I'll always cheer for JVR, Kessel, Kadri, Gardiner, Andersen, Bozak

A small miracle that a guy who couldn't play all year is suddenly healthy enough to be bought out haha. Anyways, it's a buyout.
