Can I get some hype on this guy?

I don’t know much about him but seems he is the current #4? Sitting Jiricek over him?

What’s his style ?
Strengths?
Weekness?

Is he just a place holder or does the team see him as a key contributor?

We don't do "hype" around here, unless it involves as yet undrafted prospects. At best we do "cautious optimism" with an extra heaping of caution. ;)

Christiansen's been on the radar for a while now as Yet Another Depth Guy. He was always overall pretty good in the AHL (was an All-Star last year); it was just a question of whether or not that'd be meaningful in the NHL. So far he seems encouragingly legit. Meanwhile, Jiricek's development is a bit stalled. As the latter is four years younger than the former, this is not entirely unsurprising in general. There's some hope going around here that maybe Christiansen is for real but by and large I don't think we're all quite there yet. It's still a bit early, after all.

Ooooh. Thanks for the caution notes!

What is his style? I never seen him play, puck mover? Hard nosed? Skater?

I haven't watched enough lately (I blame a combination of the Bally Sports f***ery and general malaise and despair) so take this with a grain of salt, but my impressions of him were that at first he struck me as a typical OFD and nowadays he seems much more two-way capable. I haven't taken any particular notice of what strengths he has; you'd need someone else to clarify. I certainly wouldn't characterize him as "hard nosed".

Christiansen is a good skater and a puck mover. Great shot, good vision, good passing.

When he was signed out of junior he had a great shot but that was about it. He's only 6'0 and was a bit on the weak side and not good defensively. But he's filled out well now and so far not bad defensively. He can still get outmuscled at times but not too often. He's very willing to throw a bodycheck.

Christiansen is a bit older than KJ and Bedard but I believe he's spent each summer for a long time (since they were kids?) playing with them in the BC group, and I think I can see it in some of his skilled play.

We're not rushing to label him a permanent top 4 guy yet. We all saw Jake Bean look like a top 4 D at times and then regress. Those two share some similar traits, although Christiansen is much stronger and doesn't get run over on the cycle, which was the big downside with Bean. I don't see much downside with having Christiansen out there.

Long term, the left side is

Werenski
Mateychuk
?

Provorov will be traded at the deadline. JMFJ is obviously not a long term solution.

The open position on the left side will be one of Christiansen, Harris, Svozil, or someone else. It is a wide open battle but Christiansen has a decent shot. I think the team would love for Svozil and Christiansen to really compete for the spot and make the choice difficult.

It's a long season. They're WILL be injuries. We'll likely see both of them in the lineup at some point.

Is he playing a sustainable type of game in a role he will be able to maintain?
Well I don’t really notice him at all, which I think is a good thing for defenseman. Him and Severson had the most TOI 5v5 tonight, so Evason must like something. If they are okay with Provorov playing RD with Werenski, I don’t see any chance of him not being #2 LD, unless Mateychuk gets called up.

He plays simply, doesn't make risky manoeuvres, is reliable in defence. Ideal partner for Severson, as he has a pretty decent hockey IQ. Btw, he's not so young, 25 years old.

I dig this, and am a fan f Jake's. He's gone and developed himself into a legitimate NHL player in sort of an old-fashioned way, taking more than 1-2 seasons and then bursting on the scene like we all want.

That said, if we feel like an upgrade is necessary on the defense, where is it going to come? Fabbro? Everyone likes him and thinks he's a great partner for Zach. Provorov? We seem to like what he's bringing and are on to the idea of binging him back. Severson? We hated him there for a bit but he took his benching like a pro and has come back and sems to have made attempts to clean up his game - which doesn't even get into his contract status. Gudbranson isn't retiring, is he?

To reiterate, I like Jake. He's a quality 6, even better 6/7. Just we're getting piled up there.

It's a moveable contract when it comes down to it. I feel like he's the first one out the door if upgrades happen and as much as I think keeping Provorov is a good idea it probably won't happen. I think we'll start to get real insight on the future of the D if they ever announce a Fabbro contract but as is he's great money for a bottom pairing D guy.

Honestly, at this point I view the defense going forward as:
Werenski-Fabbro
Mateychuk-???
Christiansen-Severson
Gudbranson

I want a shutdown guy alongside Mateychuk. It could be that Gudbranson can do that, depsite all our horror flashback moments of when we were giving him too many minutes before. If Serverson has been permanently unf***ed by Evason just now, it might even be justifiable.

I don’t think Gudbranson is just going to take an extra role quietly. That’s both a good and bad thing. Good because it’s competition and having multiple guys able to play is a positive. It’s bad because Gudbranson is a big leader in the room and has a pretty big role when he’s been healthy, and also makes a lot of money.

I think we’re going to have a few new faces on D next year. Whether that means Gudbranson is apart of it or not, I’m not sure.

As for Christiansen, good for him. At the very least he can be a 2nd-3rd pairing guy or an extra. Either way he has earned his spot

Good for Jake. He was a solid player here in Cleveland, and it is cool to see him benefit from his hard work. It would be nice to see him continue in Columbus, but agree that he could be a guy that is moved as part of a deal to improve the team.

Another no risk signing by DW. Contract can be buried in the AHL with no cap consequences if need be.

DW is distinguishing himself as a bargain rack guru. Most of his low money deals have provided good value.

Gotta admit, never saw potential in Jake and thought he'd get his cup of coffee in the NHL and then get buried in the minors....but I was wrong. He's impressed me, and he's been serviceable on the bottom end. Perfect 5-6 guy, and even fill in if there's an injury.

Great Deal. with the cap going up a bottom pair D-man is probably going to be 2 Million. Landing a #5 at this price with potential to grow/play up to the 4 slot is a great stabilizing move. Could be huge if we can get another top tier D-man to play on the second pair with Mateychuk.
