Jacques Richard in 1980-81 = what happened?

Just judging by the stats on there, his shooting percentage jumped to 19.9% and had significantly more PP points than any other season so I would guess it has to do with increased power play time.

Even if he had shot 0%, or not played on the PP at all, he would still have set a career high in points

The simple explanation is that Richard was a career underachiever who spent one glorious year on a line with Peter and Anton Stastny.

Lots revealed in his wiki (link). Former junior star but troubled player (alcohol and drugs) with a reputation as a slacker bounces around the minors, gets injured in '79/80, final straw with Buffalo. Contract terminated, gets picked up by the expansion Nordiques late in the year, shows a bit of his old promise, and plays with the Stastnys for a year in the following season. Moved off their line the year after that, and he returned to mediocrity.

One of the better one season wonders in NHL history, to bad alcohol and drugs ruined what could have been a great career.

The Stastny's happened.

Pretty much.

Had a huge year riding shotgun with Peter and Anton Stastny ... then the next year Marion came over, and on top of that Real Cloutier was back in the lineup after missing most of the previous year through injury and Michel Goulet continued his ascent to stardom ... ended up being odd man out and was quickly out of the league.

Jacques Richard - Quebec Nordiques 80-81' Season - What happened ?

I was browsing old hockey players, and I came across this guy.....Was relatively an average NHL'er especially for a 2nd overall draft pick averaging around .5 points/game his whole career...Then in the 80-81' season something happened and he went bananas scoring 51g and 52a for 103 points in 78gp.....After 2 shortened back to back average seasons following this he was done.....

My question is what got into this guy ??? Why did he explode for just this one year ?

here's a link to his stats

I think Peter Stastny is getting too much credit in this thread, as he and Richard weren't linemates for much of the season.

Assists on Richard's 51 goals:
Marc Tardif | 14
Dale Hunter | 12
Robbie Ftorek | 8
Michel Goulet | 8
Peter Stastny | 8
Anton Stastny | 6

He wasn't made by any one player. For whatever reason, it seems like Richard was able to temporarily subdue his personal demons. It makes you wonder how good his whole career could've been without his addictions.

Wow! That is really amazing. I had assumed everyone saying it was the Stastny-effect was correct, but this says otherwise.

Richard's last year in the QMJHL (he was 19), he scored 160 points in 61 games, so he was obviously a high-talent prospect. By the way, that equates to nearly 80% of Guy Lafleur's production in the same League, at the same age, in the same era.

I guess Richard was just a guy who had too many personal demons to get it together... except for that one magical season.
