Mrazek signing was and still is bonkers. 3.8 x 3 was a significant overpayment and clearly Dubas was not thinking ahead to resigning Jack and the impact it would have.

If Jack outperforms Mrazek this year, which is looking like almost a given, he is going to want a significantly healthier contract.

I don’t see anything below 4m.

Dubas continues to squeeze the life out of the team one contract at a time, each causing us to leak talent out the door to fit under the cap.

I think Dubas just paid full retail to make sure he had an NHL viable 1A/1B goalie if we went platoon or if Campbell flamed out or was hurt (knock on wood).

If Campbell proves himself to be a workhorse, I think you let Mrazek go to a team who needs a goalie at a really decent cap hit. Maybe Arizona, Buffalo will try to be respectable next year, or maybe Edmonton or Colorado?

yep. The most likely solution if Campbell stays this good is to sell mrazek to a team that needs a keeper.

Fingers crossed anyone wants to take Mrazek at 3.8. Keeping in mind his 10-team NTC.

He's looked good so far this season. Likeable guy, team seems to feel the same. Only caveat is...was he really any better than Freddy in the playoffs? Seems to me we had the same thing in a different package. Couldn't come up with the big save under pressure when we really needed it. I wouldn't be rushing into signing a big contract until I know more about what I have.

Well he certainly proved that last night!

Campbell is a stud. What a beauty Toronto has. He is the best goaltender out of all the Canadian teams.

Hard to say what he will get paid. It will be $5M AAV at minimum.

So I haven't read this thread yet, sorry if it's already been said but Dave Poulin just said on Overdrive that the AAV has to start at 3.8 and should go up from there. Is that realistic? Mrazek has been a pretty steady goalie in his career. He is worth his contract although he hasn't looked good yet this year. This is Jack's first full season as the starter. Is he really worth say 5 per for 5 or 6 years? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Campbell fan and I think they should do whatever it takes to sign him.
What he gets per year will all be tied to the term and 5 per for 5 years seems steep today, although it may be the going rate for him by season's end. :(

I really love Campbell, and I think he has a future with the team. But this idea of signing players to lucrative contracts for showing potential as opposed to achievements needs to stop. Assuming the media reports are true about signing Campbell to an extension, I think we should hold off on signing Campbell to a contract extension until the end of the season.

Please don't get injured.
Please don't get injured.

If he goes down with injury, I think i'd take a miracle for things not to go South.

The dumpster fire would ignite some big changes I suspect. Cant see Dubas surviving a serious Jack Campbell injury

Leafs without Jack?

I understand the thought of waiting to sign him. Not a long track record and an injury history. But also in the past, waiting until the last minute has burned the Leafs as well in terms of waiting to sign a contract.

I think if you truly believe in him and you feel that in the future you can comfortably unload Mrazek or Kerfoot or whoever, you just go and sign him now. I hate for there to be a $1.5M difference in cap hit or something just because they wanted to wait and see.

Trading mrazek shouldn't be an issue

He's at an age where his play should be constant for another few years.

I think a team like the Kings could be tempted to get him to pair with Peterson next off season.

A 4th or 5th for Mrazek and using that capspace to afford Campbell will be worth it. We'd have to get a 1-1.5M backup but ideally Woll could develop strong and be a 15-20 game backup next year

Conversely, Campbell could also become open to testing the free agent market at that point. The options for the team otherwise would include Mrazek and/or the mystery box of free agency, trade or promoting from within. Acting swiftly on this matter won't entirely eliminate the element of risk. I do think that there'd be a greater risk for the team associated with waiting though.

Clock has already cost us at least a million per year. Dubas should have offered him a long secure cheap AAV deal last summer. He could be twice as expensive by next summer.

Lock him up
Then lock this up and create a new thread called Soup

If he will sign a deal similar to Mrazek's, but maybe we have to give him an extra year on the deal, I think the Leafs can comfortably sign that now.

However, if he wants a huge offer, then I would wait. Not only do we not want to paint ourselves into a corner with cap, but he needs to prove himself in the playoffs if he wants that super-lucrative deal.

Well, if there was any doubt if Jack could handle the #1 spot…the answer is YES!

He is playing at a very high level… can he handle the workload is the only question. Leafs should’ve gotten someone more reliable than Mrazek. They need a minute eater.

82 game season. Don’t get your hopes up that he can handle the workload. He has never been able to in his career.
