Probably any goaltender would've let in those same three goals, the first one was a tap in because Matthews wasn't covering his guy. Second one was in the slot and the third one was a deflection, can't fault Campbell for ANY of those.

I think Campbell did a good job, he's not played in awhile and got the win, that's all that matters to me.

Agreed about Campbell but on a side note, yes Matthews left the centre man who scored, but in front of the net they were out manned. Rielly and Matthews were there boxing out as they should have been doing but Brodie was out strolling. He can be seen skating back into frame just after the goal.

3 goals on 31 shots is average

I think there is more to it than reading the stats.

The team in front of him was not very good. None of those goals were soft or very stoppable. He had some good quality saves particularly in the first - kept them in the game. Came out of his net and made a good play. The play of the skaters in front of him was a much bigger concern tonight.

His pre game and post game interviews were encouraging too in the sense that he seems to be in a good place mentally and physically.

The jury is still out on whether he can regain his early season form. But there was not a lot wrong with his first game back.

Agreed, perfect summary. Campbell last night was absolutely everything that I hoped he would be. Just one game of course but our cup hopes definitely went up a notch after that performance.

team defense played kinda garbage in the first couple periods not sure we can blame campbell. if not for him, the game would have gotten away from us in a jiffy.

campbell played relatively well given team defense

So all shots are created equal?

A break away shot is the same as a shot through traffic is the same as a 3 on 1 shot is the same as dribbler from the blue line is the same off the faceoff circle is the same as a whiffed upon shot is the same as.............?

What an over-simplistic method of evaluating how he played, and I am the least stats oriented guy you will find.

Come on........

Nice to have him back in the lineup. Even though the team in front of him brought the goods, Campbell still gave them enough of a chance in return to come out of the game with a fair result.

felt like campbell was the one keeping the team in it the first two periods. in the third the team in front of him returned the favor and put the game away.

He stopped the shots he should have which is an improvement. More often than not the Leafs will win with that performance. Sprinkle a couple games in where he stops the shots he shouldn't and they probably win a series or two.

Yeah when I was watching I thought come on guys, his first game back in over a month, our playoff hopes live and die with him and you can't play any better in front of him to welcome him back? Seriously?

You can't fault his play last night on any of the goals, with goaltending like that, we could easily win a series or two/three/four.

Oh the pressure on him is insane.

I thought he looked good. I didn't see the third goal but the first one was not on him by any stretch of the imagination. To me it was all I needed. He's confident, healthy and happy. The boys are a little more confident with a real goalie back there.

But....
He has no illusions that our Cup run is on him.
He has no illusions that he is deciding his future with our team and how much he will be paid.

No other Leaf has more to win or lose than our boy Campbell.
I do not ever recall a single player being so important to our success since Gilmour.

I don't think Dubas is an idiot. I'm just going on faith he felt the injury and poor play were linked and health would solve the problem.

If he's wrong they are both probably gone and we'll have a rough summer here on HF, especially if the Bruins eat us.

But if he is right. Oh boy.

I've been a Leaf fan for longer than I would like. I grew up on Sittler.
If we get Good Jack Campbell this is the best team in my lifetime.
All I want is a round but much more is possible. I beLeaf!

He was completely normal which was great to see. Just wish that point shot didn't get deflected off of the defenseman there and we could have kept it to 2.

His reaction to that goal in particular, was pleasing to see.

Last month, that goal was always going past him, and you could see he was so exacerbated & frustrated when it did. Sort of like a "how do I stop that!?"

Last night, it seemed like he just took it in stride.

Here's hoping that his break away from the game has helped his mental & emotional state. We need a Jack who is driven & determined, but not one that's so hard on himself.

I'm kind of surprised that everyone's losing their minds over M&M tonight and not one person has posted ITT. I get it, those guys put up a lot of points and Matthews made a bit of history but man, it's still a team game, winning the cup is the goal and in that regard, the most important thing about tonight's game was the excellent play of Campbell. That's two quality starts now since returning to action and that my fellow Leaf fans is HUGE!

We pretty much know what we have in M&M but goaltending, that's by far the biggest question mark on this team. If our goaltending holds up this team is a contender and could go all the way but if it doesn't, we're almost certainly a 1st round casualty. It's only two games but still, they were two very excellent performances and that question mark next to Jack in our lineup is a fair bit smaller than it was a couple of days ago.

Welcome back Jack. You played amazing tonight, nicely done. Now go get some rest and stay safe!

I suppose it's for the reasoning that a goalie typically won't hammer home a goal to go along with his shutout? ;)

It's absolutely great to have Campbell back and healthy though. There obviously shouldn't be any arguments against the goal support in front of him either. Here's to hoping this all bodes well for the future success we're aiming for.

Great game by Jack and looked like his old self from the first half of the season. Getting rest for his injury, and maybe somewhat for this thoughts, was ideal for him and the team. Lets hope he can carry this form into the playoffs so we can do some damage.
