Player Discussion Ivan Demidov: Welcome to Montreal

My question is WTF is Guhle doing way back there. He's on the ice with Hutson + 1st game in North America rookie (that actually has a f***ing chaperone!).
Whatever happened to Guhle is done.
There is 3 on 2 for Chicago and Demidov did not skate back hard enough.
I am sure he knows he made a mistake here. It's all good, anyway, he is learning.

Every player can improve, for sure. He was 'slacking' on the third goal, that's for sure, and he knows it.
He will learn...

Guhle was between the circles and he beat Demidov for the backcheck.

This is a low level analysis, Demidov is new into a new club, he doesn’t know the system, how the coach wants players to play, how he wants his forwards to defend etc

He said the game is faster

This is a nothing burger

Watch Bedard and all the young prospects how bad they are at back checking

Hes far from being the worst

Whats important here is that hes there and hes trying

I give 2 rats about his defensive play, he scored 2 pts and could have scored a few more. Its up to the team to adjust and realise be better

Then you come to the point why I wanted him away from Rottenberg asap. He's been benched and forced to play 3, 4 or 5 minute games for tripping a guy on a breakaway.

It may come down to Carolina being a hugely important game and MSL should make adjustments such as putting Demidov on the 1st PP unit. Play the kid like it's a must win game 7.
Not putting him in the shootout where teams don't really know the player was idiotic.

MSL’s head is thiccc

This is an example how the player values the defensive play.
Later in the game was an example when he backchecked better.
This is the most positive thing what I observed. He adjusted in a good way. That's cool.

Everyone blaming Demidov for that 3rd goal but that was entirely on Guhle. He sold the game.
Guhle was terrible (seriously, that interference penalty was mind-boggingly unnecessary), and he shouldn't have been caught down low but I still would have liked to see Demidov hustle more there. Yeah he was probably dead tired but still gotta give it all you got in a game like that.

I will add this : the deck was stacked in Levshunov's favour because Chicago's head scout watched him year-round in Michigan State, which he did not with Demidov. Chicago had a Russian scout on site, but the head scout was more comfortable with Levshunov whom he saw in person multiple times. The Hawks being surprised that Demidov was not a 5'10 smurf until he showed up at Milstein's mini-combine was a failure on their end.

Lesson to be learned: if you are expecting to tank, do your due diligence. It's not like Demidov came out of left field, many of us were praying (coping really) that we might get a chance at him after the 2023 draft debacle.
They have the making of a very stout top 3 with Vlasic who nailed Suzuki Levshunov who is already showing signs he can control his space and Nizer who is far better than I thought he would be.

99% of younger superstar players have no idea how to defend

Specially in their first game

From that group hes in the top 10%

Which is more thsn i expected

Offensively hes like a McDavid…so cant care less.

I don't mind the Levshunov pick, like I don't mind the Reinbacher pick. IMO the Hawks have still a bit of tanking to go through to finish assembling their core. So in the end, they might not mind not picking Demidov (who knows if they get a guy like McKenna and/or Misa...).

My criticism is mostly about them not doing their due diligence on Demidov. It felt amateurish not to bother doing the legwork to scout him properly.

Nobody's 'blaming' him for anything. He's a young kid in his first NHL game, I'd be surprised if he DIDN'T make a mistake.

People are allowed to make mistakes and have it be pointed out. It's fine. His debut was still electric, one missed defensively play doesn't erase it.

It's smart you said 99%, there are exceptions.
Marian Hossa, I think it was his first year. Ott played a preseason game in Tor, my friend was there.
Mat Sundin got the puck on his own blue line. Hossa was on the circle, maybe 5m behind.
Hossa stripped Sundin of the puck on that breakaway.
My friend does not remember anything else from that game just this race.
Who would have guessed that a backcheck can be the most entertaining play. :)

I have less of an issue with the lazy backcheck, mainly because I don't think he was being lazy just think he was clearly gassed, I have more of an issue with the bad shot selection that led to the goal.

Also, Hutson could have played that a bit better, was probably better served playing the 2 on 1 vs trying to force the puck carrier to make the only pass he could make.

All in all, who cares though...let's not micro analyze a single mistake because the rest of his game was insane.

Maybe it was adrenaline, but if that's anything close to what we can expect...he just might be HIM.
