Which of these 2 Russian prospects will end up being the better player and be a star in the NHL one day?
Here are the points per game for 16 Year Old MHL players that were drafted in the last couple years. Ivan Ryabkin (2025 draft) stat line looks pretty darn good. Be interesting to see if he plays KHL or MHL this year.
GP | G | A | Pts | PPG | |
Ivan Ryabkin | 44 | 24 | 34 | 58 | 1.32 |
Matvei Michkov | 56 | 38 | 18 | 56 | 1.00 |
Danil But | 49 | 17 | 27 | 44 | 0.90 |
Ivan Demidov | 25 | 10 | 11 | 21 | 0.84 |
Yegor Surin | 48 | 12 | 19 | 31 | 0.65 |
Igor Chernyshov | 18 | 7 | 4 | 11 | 0.61 |
Alexander Rykov | 38 | 10 | 12 | 22 | 0.58 |
Roman Kantserov | 47 | 10 | 11 | 21 | 0.45 |
Nikita Artamonov | 5 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0.40 |
Ok. This is the proper one for the players 16 year old MHL seasons. Here is the accompanying data.

Those stats don't make sense to me when looking at their point totals. Ryabkin, for example, had 58 pts in 44 mhl games in his 16 year old season. That's higher than 1 ppg.
Yeah, but Ryabkin was 8 months older than Michkov and Demidov. It was his 16/17 yo season vs 15/16 yo seasons of both Michkov and Demidov.
And Demidov had 62 points in 41 games in the 2022-2023 season which is technically his 16 year old season (he turned 17 in December).
He should have just compared the Draft -1 seasons and made it easier.

That's why I find it easier comparing something like their D-1 season. I mean it's not perfect as some players are born in November of one year and other in July of the next, but at least it's their same year in terms of draft eligibility.Sometimes the difference between D and D-1 can be just a couple of months which is nothing. 8 months on the other hand is something.
The September 15 cutoff date only applies for the NHL draft. One of my sons is born in November 2013. He's playing with and against kids born in 2012 and 2013 January 1 through December 31. The next year he's with kids born in 2013 and 2014 January through December. Those 2013 born kids are who he gets compared to while he's growing up. Two of my other sons are born before September 15 but they're playing against players born January 1 through December 31I re-did this quickly, but this would be their stats in the MHL in their D-1 season (so 16-17 year old season).
It's the easiest way to compare.

Let's say the Russian team is allowed back into the 2025 world juniors. Can Michkov play this year because he's born in December? No he can't because the NHL draft has nothing to do with WJC age groups.
Ryabkin AINEC, look at these highlights! Ryabkin is #12.
Why does it make more sense? Easier perhaps but not convinced it makes more sense.I still find it easier to compare NHL draft years as it makes more sense and is closer to reality, but to each his own...
