Prospect Info: Ivan Demidov (2024 5th OA): SKA St. Petersburg (KHL): Part III - IN SASHA ORLOV WE TRUST

It’s pretty normal that contracts need to end before new contracts begin. Why make such a big deal of this?

Ofcourse you're right, it is what it is, if he has to honour his contract so be it. But you can totally forgive the excitement and desire to bring over the best "prospect" we've drafted in over 50 years, and have him join the fold as soon as possible.

Exciting times for fans who've been dying for a player like this forever. We all want to see him in a habs jersey.

Assuming a similar timeline for the VHL playoffs, what will Demidov be doing for SKA with the last 5 weeks he’ll owe them?

Wrong answers only.

And if we could somehow win the first and second rounds of the playoff, Demidov's contract ends May 31st, which is some time in the middle of the 3rd round I believe...

Right at the start of the SC Finals.

I see no valid reasons to rush him. I'll be happy if he shows up at camp with an ELC for 3 years.
Then you're being silly. EVERY franchise would want a chance to burn his first year of ELC. You always want to do that with sure thing prospects if your salary cap will allow it.

One year less before you can sign them long term.

If I'm not wrong, now we'd need to wait until July 2027 to offer him a contract extension, while if he burned this year, we could have signed him long-term in July 2026. Probably means we will be paying him $3M+ more per season.

July 2027 is when we'll be able to re-sign him, just when the cap goes up real high, if we can't burn a year.

If we burn a year, we can re-sign him in July 2026.

Re-signing players becomes available a year before their contract runs out. Like Hutson, we can re-sign him this coming July as his contract runs out at the end of June 2026.

SKA forward Arseniy Gritsyuk to leave for NHL ahead of schedule

Source: Sport-Express

Sport.ru / Hockey. SKA forward Arseniy Gritsyuk will leave the KHL . According to Sport-Express, the 24-year-old Russian will soon sign an entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Gritsyuk's contract with SKA expires on May 31, 2025. However, the St. Petersburg club has already been eliminated from the 2025 Gagarin Cup, so Arseniy, having received permission from SKA, can leave for North America early.

In the 2024/2025 season, Arseniy Gritsyuk played 55 matches in the KHL regular season and playoffs for SKA and scored 49 (18+31) points in the goal+pass system. Roman Rotenberg's team took seventh place in the KHL Western Conference following the regular season, and lost to Dynamo Moscow in the first round of the playoffs (2-4 in the series).

Arseniy Gritsyuk was selected by New Jersey in the 5th round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft , 129th overall. With 89 points after 77 games, the Devils are currently in seventh place in the NHL Eastern Conference standings.

The Nikishin thing is weird because although it was never confirmed, there were reports saying that SKA and Nikishin had an agreement that they'd release him when the KHL year is over so he can go join Carolina. However, the latest rumors say that SKA will keep him until his contract ends May 31st. And Rotenberg's comments in his presser recently mentioned Nikishin along with Demidov as guys who are better off staying in Russia.

Hockey New Hub is pretty much the go-to guy to get news out of Russia hockey. And earlier today, he wrote this on Twitter:

Yeah I'm not sure why I wrote January, I meant July. January is for one year contracts.

But the same thing applies. You want to burn the year for star players.

The thing with a burnt year of ELC, would mean we could sign him after 1 year to a 8yr Suzuki Special.. like Hutson.

Though, if Hugo is going to go off course with salary structure it will be done with Demi

Why be obtuse? Because other players like Michkov somehow got out of their contracts. And he was such a pos that SKA wouldn't even use him. What that says is there is no point being a nice guy if you signed with SKA.
if he cant come over , I would like it more if he did not play at all. No chance of injury then

Still waiting for a true major media to report it. Not holding my breath but given the contradictory reports left and right on Nikishin and Gritsyuk I’m still not 100% convinced. I’m sure RDS would be all over this as fast as possible if this was officially confirmed.

I think the situation with SKA is in a flux (/Re: Russian media)
- Lots of criticism of Rottenberg by journalists. IMO he’ll need to pull strings to not be forced out. Even being blamed for Demidov’s play time during the season.
- Nikishin & Gritsyuk stories contradict themselves
-Guy that brought story of Demidov in VHL yesterday is credible
-Some pushback for not being fair to Demidov by Russian media.
