Prospect Info: Ivan Demidov (2024 5th OA): SKA St. Petersburg (KHL): Part III - IN SASHA ORLOV WE TRUST

Nobody knows what's going to occur, I don't think Rotenberg even knows.

I could imagine Demidov being sent to the MHL or VHL to help those teams in the playoffs. This is a common occurrence for young players in KHL. Or SKA could release him as a good-will gesture.

But I'm pretty sure money will not play a part. If Montreal was to throw millions at SKA for Demidov, they wouldve done it before the season started....not now. Plus I don't think SKA even needs Montreal's millions.

Unless Habs are playing in June, nothing will happen. KHL contracts end on May 31, so he'd still be under contract with SKA. We'll have to wait to see him in training camp and collectively cream our shorts then.

KHL broke away from Russian Hockey Federation last summer, and are now free to do as their individual clubs choose

NHL teams can negotiate with the respective KHL clubs to reach a deal for the players to come over. If the Canadiens wanted Demidov to play in Montreal next season, they could agree to a monetary agreement with SKA and bring him to North America sooner than expected.

If I'm not mistaken, Bettman prohibits NHL teams from negotiating contract releases ($$) with KHL teams.

That's news to me. Thanks for sharing, I was working off what Hughes said at his press conference that it wasn't possible.

There's also another possibility. his contract buyout can't be all that steep since he played all his games and has less than two months remaining on it. Someone like Kuznetsov could lend him, or help him find him a loan, for whatever it takes to get the f out of Dodge.

When KHL was part of Russian Hockey Federation - NHL transfer agreement (which ended after Ukraine war) was with RHF which KHL was a branch of….until last summer

Individual KHL teams are now free to do as they wish… which is the caveat Philly used for Michkov

Demidov can't buy-out his own contract. Per KHL rules, there's a specific time-window for players to do this. This window has long ago passed.

There was never a transfer agreement. There was a KHL-NHL memorandum of understanding to respect each others' contracts. That was it.
When the Ukraine situation occurred, the NHL cut off ties with the KHL, but Bettman still said the NHL would abide by the spirit of the agreement.

KHL games can be so volatile. Admiral went from 4-0 after 2 periods to getting utterly dominated in the 3rd by the Tractor tying it 4-4 going to OT. Fun fact: Zachary Fucale got pulled early in the game, he was complete trash.

I'm enjoying this a lot. Edit: And they complete the comeback!

That’s right it was an MOU signed back in 2011, and both sides were working towards a deal in place for a transfer agreement in 2022 when NHL cut off all discussion due to Ukraine war

The same could be said for millions of business. What, you advocate breaking all contracts because you can't immediately get what you want?

Demidov is not gonna unilaterally terminate his agreement. That will not be allowed to occur.

The NHL CBA forbid NHL teams from negotiating with leagues they do not have a transfer agreement negotiated. The RHF/KHL never had any with the NHL.

There is zero caveat Philly used, they either did nothing or did something that went against the NHL CBA and was illegal.

This.

Afaik, Michkov legally (per KHL laws) bought out his own contract. Philly jut paid the termination fee for him...which was around a million USD.

So, technically, the Flyers never negotiated or 'bought out' Michkov's contract from the KHL.
