I have resisted doing this thread for a while but they are 10-2-1 now, they are 1st overall in the NHL and they are 6 points up on everybody in the North except Montreal and even then they are 3 points up so nobody is within a game of catching them.

So now we need to have a conversation, what does this team need to put themselves over the top?

This feels like the year to go for it it feels like if they can add a piece or 2 they can do it, and there are pieces in this lineup I think can be replaced.

Guys like Kerfoot, I know Kerfoot had a goal and that's great but has 2 and he makes to many mistakes between all his penalities and the mistake he made last night that let Vancouver tie ir he can go.

Vesey, he's got 2 goals and he only makes 900K but you know what? 900K at the deadline gets you Rakell or Palmeri and yes this team needs a top 9 forward.

Engvall there simply isn't a spot for him that 1.2 million can be better spent that 1.2 million buyer you David Savard at the deadline, or Palmeri, Radkell, Tanner Pearson.

I think this team can do it but there are guys can be replaced.

Even Mikyehev he's not doing enough when he's out there I think he's a good player but if they couls replace him I'd be OK with that.

So I ask what does this team need to put itself over the top

I think this would officially be the beginning of our Contender status.

I still think we could use a role player or two and a better defense, but outside that we have a shot.

We won't know what this team is truly made of till we step up and actually win a playoff round and silence all the noise on media and on HFBoards.

But if we do it, this is the beginning of our 3-5 year window, with this season and this cast of players being better than any team we've had before since the 2000-2004 era.

A 3rd line centre like Kadri would be nice.

I kid.

When our forwards are healthy I can't see us needing anyone. Maybe another dman with snarl. Keep accruing cap space and see what we can get at the deadline.

Fix the PK and if Andersen can play good in game 7 then we good.

No need to overthink this, the rest of the pieces are fine. Maybe a small add like a bottom 6 checker, but thats pretty much it.

Was Tampa over thinking it when they got Coleman and Goodraw?

We still need 1 or 2 more

One big boy who can check like a Maroon.

Hyman Matthews Marnee
Nylander Tavares Simmonds
Mikheyev Kerfoot ________
Maroon Spezza Boyd

Our third line will be figured out internally...

Thornton Robertson Vesey Engvall Petan Anderson Brooks Barabanov. Still lots of time for someone to grab that spot.

Or get a top 6 winger and bump Simmonds to the 3rd line.

Again Kyle Palmeri, Rickard Rakell, Maybe Tanner pears the team doesn't need much but it does need a boost

so basically

need simmonds, thornton and campbell to heal up

Simmonds is fine but should be lower down the lineup for a deep playoff run. I think he can be serviceable in the North division but will become a weakness against the better teams later on.

Adding a good top 6 winger for Tavares and Nylander could be a real boost.

This will also naturally make the bottom six stronger.

This probably isn’t realistic but what about Hall and Staal both 50% retained for Kerfoot Engvall 1st + at the deadline when we may have enough cap if possible.

It addresses top 6 winger and is two childhood leaf fans hungry for a cup. Ideally they can play more physical for us.

Hard to say, biggest question mark is Robertson. If he comes back and clicks you have a winner, he could be a high energy, puck hound addition to the line and is a natural LW. If not I wouldn't mind going after another LW, that either plays heavy or another energizer bunny for that line.

Thornton Matthews Marner
Robertson Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kerfoot Hyman
Simmonds Spezza Boyd
Petan, Engvall

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Dermott-Bogosian
Sandin, Lehtonen

Absolutely that's why I'd push hard for Rakell

depends what the + is but I'd be all for it

So your strategy is to trim the fat and get upgrades for cheap? Why didn't any other GM think of that?

The team needs nothing right now. They need to find an adequate 2nd line lw that can spark some chemistry. Continue to try different people there like petan until we weather the injury storm. Winning is all that matters so you send the wrong message by upsetting things. Show trust but sit the non performers for awhile.

I think adding a piece this season shows them we are going for it, I think that sends a positive messege
