Confirmed with Link: Rangers hire Mike Sullivan to

I like the hire. Curious if Torts will be the AC. Worst case scenario we will fire him after 2 seasons and go for the 1st round pick lottery (hopefully someone actually good this time). We do have to fix the roster and get rid of the lazy vets as well.

He'll probably get the same results this guy would...

This was what everyone said when we brought Tortorella in circa 2009.

Well Torts at least had 1 in his prime. Built the game plan to in his mind, cater to that player, only for it to be a fatally flawed strategy in the end.

Sullivan will get the store brand version of that player and probably attempt the same thing. I’m sure they will play a lot of boring meat and potatoes hockey and be a playoff team, which seems to be the only thing that really matters to this franchise.

Dont get mad at me for asking, but what would constitute and inspired and not lazy hire for people? I'm genuinely curious. And dont say Rick effing Tocchet lol.
Root issue is everyone seems to think some sort of up and coming coach will magically make us an amazing team, then those same people point at Spencer Carberry as if he's the only reason why they are good, because it can't have anything to do with Ovi returning to 40+ goal form (after putting up career low numbers two years ago UNDER CARBERRY), or having a useful set of centers in domi and Dubios, or tom Wilson putting up a whopping 65 points (career high, besting his previous record of 52 from 4 seasons ago)...

Now, does this mean we probably should have hired knoblauch instead when we had the chance? Absolutely... That chance is gone, have to move on.

Sullivan is a decent coach. The real change will happen when the cancerous players are excised from the room

Couldnt have said it better myself. It feels like a lot of people are still pining over that Swedish coach Gronberg the Rangers interviewed a decade ago just because it wouldve been "different".

The big concern as others have expressed is that Sullivan will overplay the veterans with myopic thinking trying to get every inch out of a middling roster instead of letting younger players improve with more time.

But I think a lot of that will rest on what kind of roster Drury puts together. It's a lot easier to underplay Berard, Cuylle, etc when Kreider is still here.

The most important thing will be balancing the top 3 lines with mix of younger and older players, instead of loading up on 2 lines and having a "f*** it, here's Kakko Bonino and someone on the third line" combo

Did they even do any type of legit search once Sully became available? I know it's a big ask, but I want a Carberry type. Young guy with a track record of working with younger players.

As @TheTakedown pointed out, Carberry looked like an absolute clown a year ago when we swept the Caps. Washington made sweeping additions to their roster this summer and they still arent really a real Cup contender by any of the measure that are routinely held against the Rangers. It helped that Ovechkin and Wilson have had their best seasons since their Cup year in 2018. I wanted Knoblauch when we hired Laviolette but whats done is done. Sullivan is the best candidate.

I don't think he looked like a clown, but opinions vary. However, the bigger issue on this team is the dead weight on the roster & the overall lack of talent.

I actually think he's quite a good coach and it's not all hurhur malkin and crosby but I'm definitely not encouraged by the thought process here.
I like his system, at least we aren’t going to just sit back in a 1-3-1 in the neutral zone lol. But right now the rangers don’t have the personnel to maximize success with how Sullivan wants to play and limited flexibility to make changes to the roster. It’s going to be a tough first year unless there are some unexpected moves.

I like the Sullivan hire, but I wont be happy if they make no changes and just think a new voice will fix things. The purge isnt done and this hasnt changed my thinking. But as far as the cultural issues with the team, it was important to bring in a real CEO type, not Gallant who blew his nose with his tie and Laviolette who was afraid to enter the locker room and checked out like the vets at the first sign of adversity.. Sullivan is hands on and demanding of his players. He was Crosby's guy. That matters to me. He hung on a long time with shit rosters and the leagues worst goaltending because he had Sid's respect.

I'm not upset per se about the hire. Of the coaches currently available, I think he's the safest choice by far and I could actually see a scenario where the team buys into his message and plays well, at least for a few years.

But here are my issues:

A) There wasn't a thorough search. Drury has had wood for Sullivan for years and rushing to sign him up is equivalent to blowing your load. This shows a complete lack of creativity on Drury's part.

B) Sullivan is going to be the highest paid HC? Ummm, why? Based on what? What has he done to deserve that? He's not the best head coach in the NHL. The guy hasn't made it past the first round since 2016-2017. And look, it's not my money and it's not like it counts against the salary cap. But the idea that Dolan would not be outbid for Mike Sullivan? Like he's Scotty Bowman in his prime? Again, the guy hasn't made it past the first round since 2016-2017 while having three players who are well on their way to the Hall of Fame.

C) This team needs a minor rebuilding and despite my feelings on Drury, I don't think Sullivan is the right to revitalize the careers of guys like Laf and K'Andre Miller, and help develop guys like Othmann, Berard, Perreault, etc.

So IDK, this feels like it could be more of the same. We'll make the playoffs thanks to Igor, won't make it to the SC, the young guys won't develop properly, rinse, and repeat.

Yes because Igor got us to the playoffs this year. Can we stop overrating him?
