But he did want back in the US…

Indeed but most people thought he was going NJ too and even NJ thought it was a done deal.

The reality is if they want PLD, the best course remains to trade for him now, get him 8 years to lower the AVV and as long s we're not giving back a prime asset, which we have very few of, they shouldn't hesitate.

Seriously? You are comparing him to Kovalev.........
Seriously what? Name the best proven players we've traded for or sign as UFA since 2000. Sorry but PLD would be top 3 right next to to Kovalev... Suzuki was just a prospect at the time. Dach might be good but stats show PLD have the big stick.

If you ask the 32 DG who they take between Kovy and PLD on their team, result will be close to 50/50 imo. You make it sound like it's not even close lol

Most of you are running this thread under the assumption we will suck as much next year; we won’t. With PLD or not.

This year, upper management let the tables run because of the quality of the draft. So they sent injured players packin’ early, without making any deals to compensate, relying on AHLers.

Won’t happen next season. Draft is said to be not as deep, obviously. So trying to tank as much as possible will not be worth it. And if you got HuGo’s and Molson’s messages, you prolly understood that the team still needs to grow but will not be as bad as this season or the previous one. I expect them to finish in the 12-14 bottom range next season. No more top 10 unless lucky AF at the lottery.

I expect some movement going forward by HuGo once the Finals are over.

So PLD is not a must. But we ain’t tanking anymore. Get that out of your heads already. That is now done. Our Calgary first round pick (from 2025 I think) is our next ‘chance’ at a top 5-10 pick in the draft.
Team defence as a whole is going to have to improve ten-fold this team to crawl out of the bottom 10 next season.

Not that I disagree but what is the absolute basis of being flawed?

Panarin, Fox, Trouba only wanted NYC, Bobrovsky, Tkachuk only wanted South Florida, Tavares wanted to go home etc.

In the context of this thread?

You'll have to ask where Fox and Trouba would have ended up if the Rangers had told them to f*** off and to come back as UFAs.

It’s a partnership, PLD camp needs to make his desire to be traded/signed to only Montreal crystal clear so Habs don’t have to part with top assets similar to the other deals

That sounds like a dumb idea indeed. What if you trade a lower first round pick for a pre-committed 8 year contract PLD?
Would depend on the contract for me. A player on an ELC would have value as the ones ahead of them start to earn when their ELC end.

Look where it has gotten the Rangers. Now they would love to unload Troubd and clear cap space. Look at Toronto with JT. Sometimes you need to look s gift horse in the mouth.

That doesn't do anything for anyone who doesn't to pay now because we could get him for "free" in one year.

In the grand scheme of thing neither team are in a dire situation, so maybe expend on why it's so terrible to rack up 100pts seasons and being sold out every night for them.

The problem is, there's definitely someone who'll come up with the claim that FLA 1st, Kidney and Dvorak is "Steep" because Kidney suddenly is a bluechip, yada yada. Some people will even claim Mesar is the best forward prospect this team has if they ever see him in trade proposals.
That's not a steep price. Dvorak does not move the needle and trading him saves cap space,, a 31-32 pick is unlikely to move the needle and Kidney will likely struggle in the AHL.

we need to suck one more year, the next draft after this is going to be a few franchise players if we learn how to tank properly, without all the Rudy's showing up and winning games because they've been buried in the minors for 20 years and suck balls until they got a chance. I hate Belizle and these buttheads for suddenly showing up and winning games for us out of nowhere, piss off. PLD can only come here if Allen is starting, I feel Montembust is going to go on a heater and be a starting goalie after his little gold medal performance.

Run-on -sentences? Come at me
If all goes well I expect we will be at or just above NHL .500 The year after is where Marty starts really earning his pay. You can't run a team being Mr. Nice Guy all the time he will have to start cracking down on loose play.

Agents are the root of all evil in sports.

You're right.
My point was that people will make themselves believe a lot of stupid shit.

Based on every thing we know and have heard the Habs should be hovering around the .500 mark or slightly above. This is where I felt normal progress in our rebuild would take us next season. The only thing we can't predict are injuries because we do have players who seem to be brittle.

Eight years? The back end of such a contract will be a boat anchor for this team. One can easily foresee the future angst of so many fans here about the past improvident overreaching to secure this player. Oh those shinny new toys.

And apparently Gaudreau only wanted to go home but insted ended up in Columbus......you never know how these things turn out

And we've been fooled too many time in MTL. Hossa's gloves , Shananan helicopter tour , Brett Hull to MTL that was "almost done" , the whole Lecavalier trade rumors saga etc

So yeah i'll believe it when i see it lol

the gm's never learn, look at the Tavares contract... just handcuffs teams and they still haven't won anything with all that money locked up

He'll be in his early 30ies at the tail end of the deal and the cap will be signficantly higher unless a pandemic or something.

(Of course if he requires paying 9.5M/yr, that's too much in the first place, but that's besides the point, which is Dubois is still young enough for a long deal)

It's not a Brandon Gallagher scenario either : Dubois doesn't quite play the same game, doesn't have the same physique, didn't get injured as much and has more pure skill in the first place.

We're still at a point in time where Chevy is allowed to dream, not much sand left in that hourglass tho.
I wouldn't make it out to be that bleak, a contender with a need for a top 2 line center, could get a year of Dubois at 3M if Winnipeg retains, or even 1.5M if a third team retains for the full season instead of just from the TDL. Colorado Carolina, Washington, Boston, all come to mind and can all offer a decent return to Winnipeg.

Do you actually think they would've won something if they hadn't signed Tavares? Because personally I have little doubt they would have still not won anything.

If that's the conclusion of 2 years of dicking around that's pretty bad for them. The optic of selling when his own team could very much be in playoffs contention wouldn't look that great either. And an untimely injury would make him look like a straight up moron.
