Why would PLD need to be as good when he's not going to cost anywhere near the same?
My 2 cents.............it doesn't really matter whether the guy is a 60pt player or 80 pt player.............it comes down to leverage.............and Hughes has the hammer there.
I think we all hope we can land him, without costing the farm so to speak............which it wont because the Jets, do not have the leverage.

the whole point of him reaching FA was because he wants to join the Habs if we trade for him hes obviously gonna extend with us

Have you not been hearing insiders talk about it this past year? i mean one insider is most probably bullshit but when you have all of it and even Friedman talking numbers like 95% he joins the Habs this cant be just a rumour anymore even Lebrun said the whole hockey world knows Dubois wants to go the Montreal
Sorry gang I just don’t trust the “Insiders “ I remember when Friedman was insideing that Stamkos was heading to the Habs. Talking heads just talk.

People who are standing all excited waiting for that trade to happen are going to be disappointed because like you said, if there isn’t an extension in place it won’t happen. And PLD has pulled every string possible to make sure he hits UFA as early as possible. Why would he throw it away with one year to go? Because some of our fanbase thinks he’s a bigger fan of the Habs then a paycheque? Wake up. Everything he’s said and done indicates there is no hometown discount here.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that you're saying that this isn't a case of a Quebec kid doing everything in his power to fulfill his lifelong dream of playing for the Habs , but one of a player and his agent maneuvering themselves into a position to accept the largest contract offered to them on a long term deal in order to guarantee his future financial security . Color me shocked !

Everything kinda quieted down on this since it seems the Jets are being unreasonable on their ask and Montreal/Hughes are more than comfortable waiting to FA.

Jets are gonna overplay their hand like their Kyle Dubas.
It's honestly ridiculous. All they'll get for Dubois at most is a 2024 late 1st from a competitive team and a B ranked prospect. They have a chance to sell higher with the Habs but their ego might get in the way

I think you nailed it on the head. It's come to a matter of pride. They are in trouble with multiple player turnover and the core is pretty much leaving. They can't be seen just throwing the towel. Rw-construction in Winnipeg might be a tough pill to swallow. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Jets should be thankful if they can get guys with some term like Anderson and Dvorak.

No one wants to live in Winnipeg, plus who wants to play with freaks like this.

Hughes turned down a 1st for Anderson so technically he is willing to offer 2 1sts and Dvorak for PLD? Seems like an overpayment.

I don't even see how this makes sense for the Jets who are going to be trading away PLD, Scheifele, Wheeler, and Helle this year then Ehlers and Connor next year unless they plan on flipping Anderson and Dvorak.
there’s no link between Hughes refusing a first for Anderson and what you think he’s willing to pay for PLD. In the end each player is an asset but also apart of a core . If someone fit with your needs, you just keep him ev n if a 1st is offered. If you think a player from another team is exactly what you need, you just pay what it takes to get him

And Toronto was stupid to do so, imagine if they didn't sign Tavares how much better off they would be.
I think you’re right in the sense that it was a lot of cash and they probably could’ve pushed for cheaper, but adding Tavares without giving up assets is what any contender-wanna-be would do.

That being said, at one point Tavares was arguably a top ten player in the league. PLD isn’t close to that. And I agree with you we shouldn’t overpay. If he wants to come here at a discount (or at least reasonable) contract, great. But I wouldn’t give up big assets or money for him.
The Toronto/Tavares situation is even more reason to not get into a bidding war over a UFA, especially when you have young players who will command high salaries in the near future.

There's no reason to trade anything for him, nor over pay, if he wants to come when he's a UFA then he can sign a fair deal. That will be his choice for "wanting" to play for a specific franchise. I feel like if you tell an org you prefer them it gives them more leverage than you give yourself. Imagine telling a potential employer you really only wanted to work at their company and no others, doesn't that give THEM leverage when negotiating a salary? If you come to an interview and say "I really only want to work here , but I also expect to make more working here than I would at any other company" they'll tell you to kick rocks and look for better salary elsewhere. You can't have your cake and eat it too , if you're going to be very selective over who your employer is you're likely going to have to make sacrifices somewhere
Agreed.

I still think the repatriation of Pierre Luc Dubois will happen over the off season.

Kent Hughes will look pretty sharp coming out of the draft after he's added PLD and Reinbacher, potentially shoring up some big holes in the lineup.

Assuming that the price for PLD is the Florida 1st, Dvorak, and a young roster player (potentially Harris?) I think we have our man at Center. Sign him to a front loaded, signing Bonus contract, 8.5 x 8 and we have our top two centers for most of a decade.

I'd like to add some size/toughness so I'd sign Miles Wood as a UFA, and trade Hoffman and Edmundson for picks/prospects.

Caufield - Suzuki - Dach
Slafkovsky - Dubois - Anderson
Wood - Beck - Gallagher
Havey-Pinard - Evans - Armia

Matheson - Savard
Guhle - Barron
Xhekaj - Kovacevic

Starting to lose interest in this player. I wouldn't trade for him. Let the cards fall where they will fall, if he truly wants to be a Hab he will sign here in free agency. Keep the Florida 1st, don't trade Beck.

Fixed it for you. Caufield is a RW by the way.

I'll make a prediction

If Dubois comes here, it'll take less than two years for the fanbase to turn on him because of his inconsistency and sulking whenever it doesnt go his way. There will be a small contingent of die hard PLD fanboys who will defend him tooth n nail versus the onslaught of legitimate complaints and we'll have Drouin 2.0 on our hands.

My other prediction, MSL might just be a miracle worker and PLD does just fine in Montreal, but I won't be holding my breath.
Reminds me of the lead up to the Tavares F/A signing. There were hordes of Leaf fans offering their homes/farms if the team could just sign their anointed savior. Now those same fans are prepared to offer their homes/farms to any team willing to assume that horrible contract. Fans never learn. Some general managers too. Oh those shinny new toys.

That would be disastrous.

We need a real elite offensive talent, not PLD.
