What is NYI's objectives?
If it's going into rebuild, Habs have a truckload of picks and I'd be willing to throw a lot of Them to get Barzal

If they want a retool, sadly we can't help with that

I want Dobson in Boston very badly but not giving up Pasta to do it.
Pasta is the only player you have that returns Dobson. We would add... a lot.

Yeah it's a retool, Barzal doesn't go without getting a scorer back.

Retool via getting younger and faster. Rebuild just isn’t going to work, especially with what Montreal will make available for the Islanders pieces of interest (understandably so).
Personally I feel like next year you guys should take Demidov and staple him to the first line no matter who has to go down a line in response. That kid is going to be a freak once he quickly gets used to the smaller NHL ice.

I've mentioned this before, but we can't fully tank. Sorokin is too good (when he's good) and steals too many games. Without the insane run he had before the break we would legitimately be in last in the east right now. So you're sort of forced to try and win during the duration of his contract

By the end of next season the contracts will be up for Nelson, Palmieri, Pageau and Lee will all be up. Hopefully Lou isn't braindead enough to let them walk without returning assets for them, because that should really be a lot. Once they're gone, basically half of our top 9 so the retooling is sort of built in right now - that is, if Lou doesn't bring everyone back.

The remaining 5 there are Barzal, Horvat, Tsyplakov, Holmstrom, and Duclair. At least two of those spots will be replaced internally by Cole Eiserman and Danny Nelson. We will have a top ten pick this year, and that will likely go towards another forward - If we don't trade up for Hagens (LI Native), you're hoping for Desnoyers/McQueen/Frondell, and potentially one of them is up by the start of 26-27 as well.

I think the most likely outcome is that Pelech or Pulock is dealt this offseason for another top 6 player - however, I (and most fans...and our GM) agree that they really need another difference maker up front. We have been historically unable to lure big name FA - This is why you hear whispers of Dobson being dangled for star players. I think it would be the wrong way to go about it, but as it stands that's our clearest route to pick up an impact forward ATM.

Michkov, that's all

No, we'd get more dealing them individually.

Sorokin is not a team.

With Sorokin you sit at 57 point on the year. Bottom half in scoring and defence (https://www.oddsshark.com/stats/team/hockey/nhl/16592) , andmostly an older core.
Barzal like petterson in vancouver is having himself a year, and with injuries hampering if he can be that guy again, and who else besides Pulock and Dobson to move the needle going forward?

You have Cole Eiserman and Danny Nelson and really piss all after that being ranked 26th overall for prospect pool. (The NHL’s Best Farm Systems Ranked - 2024-25 Midseason Update - The Hockey Writers Latest News, Analysis & More)

I think you are delusional that your team needs to hold back a rebuild cause you have assest like Sorokin. I 100% agree with you in terms of "We have been historically unable to lure big name FA - This is why you hear whispers of Dobson being dangled for star players. I think it would be the wrong way to go about it" , do you really want to hold hope your geriatric front office is up to the task of moving players side to side until the magic waters restore the glory of the Islanders core that besides last two years was there with a chance since 2018.

Simmer down bud, it's just a message board.

Sorokin is coming off of back surgery and did not have an offseason. The entire defense in front of him was decimated for the entire year - we were playing a 19 year old third rounder with 4 professional games to his name for a majority of the season. We have Tony Deangelo, who started the year in the KHL playing 25 minutes a night, still. Oh, and our best player has also missed a majority of the season.

Even with all that, we were like 3 points out of a playoff spot during 4 nations. Why? Sorokin stole like 10 games that we had absolutely no business winning while running out half an AHL team. I don't know what more evidence you need than this season to see that no matter how bad it is in front of him we aren't ending up with a top 5 pick.

His presence makes it impossible to fully re-build... hence, re-tool. Or deal Sorokin, which would signify a rebuild (not happening). So any offers for Barzal that consist fully of futures make no sense until that happens.

A realistic response.
Make an offer then? What's realistic to you for us to move Barzal to a divisional rival?

He's cost controlled now and now only. He gets a new contract and he's no longer cost controlled. The worry is that the new contract that he gets (which in turn makes him not cost controlled) will be for too much. He's not 22, he's 25 and in his 6th NHL season.... he's played 360 games, we know who he is.

I'm not trying to just offload him either.... but I think he could be available for the right offensive player.
My point is — he is cost controlled this next season. We can extend him with QO for one more year. Unless he specifically requests a trade, I would hold him this one more year at minimum. If the guy produces a big season again, they pay him (and keep him). if he struggles, then we can move him as a pending UFA next year. I would sign him to the cost controlled additional year and NOT fork over a massive contract this summer. Lets see if he can put it back together next season first.

The overpay you just got mad about. Isles aren't going to unload core players for a crap platter of late first rounders in a weak draft. If we sell, it's probably going to be just Nelson, Palmieri, maybe another vet if we get a good offer. Then reassess needs in the offseason. More likely that if Barzal goes, it's in a hockey trade that benefits both teams. And more than likely it's not going to happen with a divisional rival unless there's a big overpay.

That offer was silly. Nothing wrong with an overpayment. Just needs to be a little more realistic. Trading MM isn't realistic in this case.

You still haven’t offered anything to the conversation. I’ll ask again - what are you offering to us to move our best forward within the division?
Go read my first post on this topic. Then go from there.

Hathaway, Deslauriers, Risto, and 6th rd pick. Those are the type of guys the Isles covet, it seems.
