I'm pretty confident that the most backwards league in the world is the NHL. Every other league has embraced analytics and instead the coaches and management in the NHL embrace hockey mythology that toughness without being actually good is more important than being good. I'm watching a bum ass coach destroy what looked like might be a special team because he's trying to play a try hard bum in the top pairing because he looks gritty and tough. And considering this bum ass coach has been to three finals it makes me wonder how pathetic coaching is in this league. I guess every coach is an idiot. So is my hypothesis correct are all team's coaches idiots?

Yes. I could easily do a better job.

We don't have to be able to do every aspect of the job better than the coach. But I feel like if you are not stubbornly obsessed with NHL mythology around grittiness and know how to read xGF% you're already ahead of coaches in the NHL in at least some aspects.

Most HF users could coach/manage better than most coaches/GMs, and yes, I’m serious

Honestly, all it'll take is not being stubborn. In other sports coaches follow analytics and try to do the best job that they can. In the NHL it's all about grittiness and toughness. I'm convinced that the NHL has the dumbest fans of any sport. They don't watch to win, they watch so players can beat up on each other. And coaches are not far from that.

Not yet, but I feel like the become idiots over time. Randy Carlyle, then Mike Babcock, then Sheldon Keefe, all turned to idiots. The only one I wouldn't say became one is Pat Quinn, I have lots of respect for the big Irishman. I would never call him an idiot.
