Check out this video of Giannis Antetokounmpo talking about if their season was a failure after the Bucks got eliminated. Its like 2 minutes long, but a very interesting perspective. How do you all think this relates to our favorite team?

I loved this response from Giannis but the situations are just not the same.

We essentially went all in trading for Kane and Tarasenko. Not advancing past the first round would be a massive failure.

The other significant failure in my mind is Laf's stagnation and lack of development this year. That's scary for a 1st overall pick.

I agree, we went all in. Different situation than this clip
Cup or bust
Last year i was fine with getting the young guys PO experience
But not this year. Not after giving up all those picks
Our stars need to show up in elimination games. Lets see if they will

Giannis is correct if you’re assuming you’re on the correct path and your process makes sense.

I’m not sure we are.

A stepping stone.... in which direction?

I unfortunately said it from the outset.... we do not have the coaching or tactics to go far. We can't adapt. We try to play 20th century Islander hockey with a finesse/skill roster. We have atrocious puck support and puck movement. Our transition is comically bad. We can't complete basic things with the puck, like stickhandling or passing.. Can't hit the net with our shots. We sure as shit can't out skate anyone... we wont out work anyone... We wont outmuscle anyone...

so, what do we do exactly? What's our identity? Power play and Goaltending? What happens when one aspect isn't going? See, Game 3, 4 and 5.

Is getting bounced in the first round a failure? If the expectation was to repeat last season's success or beat it, than yes.

If you thought we'd likely take a step back from how far the team got last year, than 50/50.

I think there have been certain aspects of this season that have been troubling.

- top 6 never meshing.

- lack of consistency from the younger players.

- team lacking an identity all year, minus a few spurts.

My biggest takeaway from this year is that Gerard Gallant never had the roster that fit the style of play he wanted. The roster he did have was only capable of paying that style in small spirts and was quickly exhausted. If anything, the whole season has been about getting farther away from a Gallant roster. I think that, more so than the success or failure of the team in the POs is the biggest indicator that he's likely gone. A healthier situation is one where the coach gets closer to the kind of team he wants on the ice. The org feels schizophrenic. Are we a team with a plan? Or are we a team chasing shiny objects?

I think, if anything, I'm very worried that there's major dysfunction going on inside management. The vision went from being clear to being very unclear. The players are not unified on the ice. It just feels like we're closer to being the Rangers when Drury was a player vs last season.

Going to be really interesting to see what can be done given the cap constraints. Team needs a more impactful leader and/or a coach who can change the culture on the ice and likely off. I would have been cool with Trotz.

Not to me, I never thought this team was that good and last year's run was sort of a fluke spearheaded by one of the greatest goaltending seasons ever. Kane and Tarasenko are no longer star players and the defense is highly overrated and the worst in the league in transition. Maybe if they didn't get this matchup against NJ they could have won a series but I think this is about the right result.

I think it's a different situation. If this team can't put together a run this year (and it looks like they can't) then they aren't going to suddenly be better next year with the same core and coaching staff. It's not a young team anymore other than the third line.

This is a team who's window is closing and has shown to be beatable in 4 straight games for the second year in a row after the opposing team has figured out how to shut them down in game 3. The issue is they're just not that good at generating chances when playing tight, forechecking hockey.

And mentally, they don't have the killer instinct to close out series in less than 7 games. Ever.

The only thing we can hold onto is the fact that they truly earned a 7 game win over the Carolina Hurricanes in a closely contested series, even when outplayed in 3 out of 4 road games.

The rest of their playoff success against the Penguins was pretty much a fluke. And they had no answers in games 3-6 against Tampa or this year against NJ in games 3-5. Like.... game 3 was winnable, but they've cratered since losing that one.

Yes, it’s a failure if they get eliminated by Monday. To give up six draft picks on four rentals to win two playoff games, while still having no clue what Laf and Kakko are.
I think we know what Kakko is. He's a middle-6 forward, arguably a 2nd line winger considering his 5v5 production. We know his style, we might not know what the ceiling is or will he ever reach it. But I think we know pretty well what Kakko is.

Laf? No idea. I have no idea what type of a game he wants to play for starters, let alone what level of player he could be. Doesn't look good for a 1st OA pick coming from his ELC.

Doesn’t matter if the team has no heart or pushback. You can have the most talent but if you dont have heart or pushback, it does not matter.
I've said this so many times. We have all the talent a team should need for a championship but they are not willing to work for it.

I dont think we have cup winning potential but with luck and hard work hey you never know right? I've seen less talented teams win with hard work. The issue I have is how do you play so well the first two games and then just go flat? There is a saying in hockey that the only thing you can really control is the effort you give. How the fck did they just stop giving effort?

It's almost like, the NHL is just as rigged as the other big sports. I just cant understand it.

not only would it be a failure but one of the worst failures in the history of the franchise. with the hype around the trade deadline acquisitions and after going up 2-0 in the series it would be an enormous embarrassment.

and guess what? the Devils are only going to get better. we'll have to go through them for the next 5 years at least. this year was our window.

Devils defenseman pipeline is ridiculous. They got so many gems.

I never liked the Kane deadline pickup but Kane is actually out playing Panarin. What a lazy and soft ballerina that kid is.
