Is the NHL doing anything to make it worth a team's while to lend their players?

I mean, for example the Dallas Stars can't be too happy about what happened to Tyler Seguin. He's out for god knows how long before even getting a chance to play for Dallas this season. The best compensation they could hope for is purely financial, nothing to make up for the loss of one of their biggest stars.

This is the reason I don't see why they don't want to send players to the Olympics. They should cancel the world cup of hockey or do both.

The teams are getting shared revenue from the tournament and the players are getting a lower escrow.

The nhl and nhlpa make money from the world cup of hockey.

While the olympics all the nhl and nhlpa will get is loss of money. Since the olympics have said they will no longer cover the insurance of said nhl players.

Also it's before the season starts, so at least you're likely to get your player back as early as possible for playoffs. Whereas If you're best player is out for 3-4 months in January you're pretty much screwed.

I feel like in this regard North American fans are extremely spoiled. The concept of club managers showing resentment towards releasing players for a World Cup or even in many cases a continental championship is fairly North American. The same risk is run in every other sport that is internationally based, it's not like these problems are unique to North American sports and unsolvable. The only region that can't seem to wrap their heads around it is in fact North America.

European soccer clubs are moving this way quickly.

they cant deny players to take part of Fifa events. If a player wants to go, there is nothing the teams can do about it. That said, the national federations always want to keep a good relationship with teams.

The teams and league in question are the same entity. Teams are lending their players to the tournament because the owners want to make money off of it.

For now they can still be sanctioned. However it's very easy for the club to pressure the player to decline the call up

Not really. Generally managers throw an indoor hissy fit about players being called for like the AFCON managers are pretty racist about that. But this isn't even AFCON remember this is the World Cup of hockey in theory it's a big deal.

That's always been the case, there's no trend there, but only for smaller tournaments and friendlies. Some clubs are straight racist and consider AFCON a small tournament...I have little respect for that, but that's always been the case.
