Is Philipp Grubauer overrated?

He just about won the Vezina last year and has been a top 5 goalie in the world over the last 3-4 seasons. Now he's putting up the worst numbers of his entire career.

What's wrong with him?

He's a top ~20 goaltender that was propped up by playing on a good team, but nowhere near worth his contract.

His first season playing on a truly not good team. I don't think he's the goaltender you want trying to carry you to success.

Even on a good team... he was pretty average in the last playoffs for Colorado imo. He has not shown he could be THE guy. He has been a backup or a tandem goalie on not only good teams, but powerhouses since starting his career.

If he was truly that good, do people really think BOTH Washington and Colorado would let him go? He's super replaceable.

Colorado favoured riding a tandem with Francouz and a UFA tbd (Kuemper).

Washington felt that Grubauer was worth sacrificing to get rid of Orpik's contract despite Holtby playing like crap and Samsonov being purely potential at that point in time.

He's the new Elliott, at the right place right time to look amazing on a stacked team, and for the next 5 years fans will wonder "what happened"

He went from SC champions Washington to powerhouse Colorado. I said the moment Seattle signed him that they were making a huge mistake. He was a product of his team and he had never started more then 40 games in a season so he hadn’t been battle tested in a true starters role.

do people acutally think ANY goalie would look good in Seattle?
Yes

I've counted a league HIGH 27 goals stoppable on Grubauer. He's given up softy after softy. I've watched EVERY SINGLE GOAL he's allowed this year (along with every goal scored on every goalie since the 18-19 season) and the second highest are 6 behind him with 21 that I've counted stoppable. I'd have to go to my notes on my phone, which is charging, but I think it's Koskinen at 21 and one other guy. I think it's Cam Talbot?

Driedger has been a sieve, I counted 3 on him last night and 10 in total. I only counted one on Daccord and he's allowed 11 lol.

There's been numerous where Grubauer has allowed a terribly soft goal and the announcers (for the other teams) were calling him out and Ray Ferraro was calling him out on an ESPN+ game.

They were giving it to Driedger last night on the Flames broadcast too. The first goal he allowed doesn't look that bad, but he was overcommitted and overchallenged, took himself too far out of the crease. He STUNK. That goal beat him 5-hole when he was sliding wasn't a terrible goal, but he played it so poorly and he looked like he knew it after it beat him.

Driedger was easy to see coming though, as he's in his late 20's and wasn't even an NHL regular for a while and on his second organization? He strikes me as an Andrew Hammond 2.0 so I was expecting it with him, but not with Grubauer.

Grubauer has been BAD.

Goalies are weird. So many times a goalie has a really bad year but then can follow it up with a good year (look at Andersen last year compared to this year). If this continues well into next season then I would start to worry.

Going into the season I thought the kraken would have issues scoring not defending. Boy was I wrong

Almost winning the vezina in a short season doesn't really say much. He sucked when it matters the most, 2nd round against Vegas. I know the team in front of him didn't play good either, but the Avs scored enough goals to win that series if they could get a save from Grubauer

Grubauer was often the MVP for the Avs the past 2 years. He really held the fort back there especially in the past two playoffs.
Everything here is wrong, especially holding the fort in the last 2 playoffs. The Avs steamrolled Arizona in 19-20 and Grubauer got hurt immediately against Dallas. Last playoffs started great against the Blues and Vegas until Grubauer completely fell apart and started playing garbage hockey.

As with Oleksiak, I had no idea either guy was even rated until they signed their contract with Seattle.

Like, Grubauer is a guy, but I had no idea people thought he was some elite goalie before free agency. He's just any other NHL goalie who got paid off the quality of his last team. Which isn't uncommon, I guess.
