I personally think his wrist is permanently damaged and it will never be back to what it was. He is still amazing, but it has taken it's toll. I remember his 4 goal debut versus Ottawa .. and it is just not the same wrist anymore. A broken vase can be glued back together and still be beautiful, but it will never be what it once was. This is just my theory and I love Matthews. From my personal experience - I broke my nose and it is still ****** up and I know it will never be the same again ... and I loved my nose.
RIP your nose

For me the question is how long till his wrist is completely healed.
Right now he is fumbling with the puck and missing with with his passing.
And slapshots instead of that deadly wrister, so he’s way off.

To be fair, he scored with a great wrister against Vegas.

It might be the wrist but think most of his issues are with timing more than anything else. That will come with more games under his belt this season.

Predicting well into the future that that your nose will never be the same?..I now dub you Nostrildamus.

Willie is having a great season with 15 points in 16 games. Draisaitl in comparison has 14g and 14a. Absolutely amazing.
Draisaitl and McDavid on the same team is just nuts. Two of the top 3 players in the world on one team. I think they will get it done at some point as they are the modern day Geno and Crosby.

Idk if Matthews wrist is where it needs to be yet. The velocity in his shot just isn't there. Haven't seen him even attempt some of the dirty snipes he's had in the past.

I don't think that he is 100% no but he is improving. Not seeing that wrist shot of his to the same extent as last season which makes me wonder if he fully trusts it. When he does fire off his wrister it looks good but it is impossible to tell if it hurts him to do so.

Put me in the camp believing something is still off. Stick-handling and shot just isn’t the same. His ability to steal the puck by lifting someone’s stick was amongst the best I have ever seen. Haven’t noticed that as much since the wrist injury. Could be in my head…

Well he’s one step closer to having a robot arm then. Either way he’s going to be ok.

It's not his wrist that is the problem, its the fact that he lost his left hand wingman to free agency.

Matthews shooting % is at an all time low because of those high quality scoring opportunities he use to have generated by the glue player on his line in the past.

This is not even remotely close to true. It wasn't Hyman creating the high quality scoring opportunities; it was Matthews and Marner.

In fact, Matthews currently has the highest xGF/60 of his career. Even despite coming back from surgery and missing training camp, he is generating more offensive opportunities now that Hyman is gone, than he ever did when he was with Hyman.

So far this year he has the highest on-ice scoring chances for and expected goals for rates of his career.

On an individual level, here's how this year compares to the previous 3yrs at 5v5 per 60min:

This Yr: 10.43 shots, 15.64 scoring chances, 5.21 high danger, 0.99 expected goals
Prev 3yr: 10.53 shots, 12.88 scoring chances, 5.37 high danger, 1.03 expected goals

The only thing I see greater here is his scoring chances. Tbh the overall statistics you posted seem rather in line with his career totals.

That being said, wrists are a f***ed up thing to have surgery on. How do I know you ask? I have a plate and 7 screws in mine. It still isn’t 100% a decade later. Lots of small bones in your wrist, and if they shift you can have long term effects.

I’m guessing Matthews is back to his old self by the new year. Guy has looked great at times this year.

two different things.

His "on-ice" numbers (i.e. how the team does when he is on the ice) are the highest of his career. I didn't list those.

The numbers I listed there, as I tried to say, are his individual numbers - which I agree, are right in line with his typical career numbers.
