Is Johansson our 4th long-term/core top-4 D (Mo, Ed, ASP.. AJo?)

Of course they do an in between period segment w Yawney on how great Ed and AJo are together and how bright their future together is today lol.

Fine lol.

Find a Chiarot upgrade for Seider to play w on the top pair.

Then find another Chiarot upgrade for ASP to play w on the 3rd pair lol.

It's actually amazing how many wide open point blank shots Chiarot gets being on the ice w Seider.

If we are going to find a Chiarot replacement... my two and only requirements would be:

1) Solid defensively, and w the puck in the DZone.

2) A bomb point shot

i actually think that johansson will be trade bait. he and kasper are the first 2 roster players we've developed that we could trade and not devastate the roster

maybe by the deadline he will have enough value around the league to get something nice

I hope we trade for Josi or similar to play with Seider.
Seider has not reached his potential yet and there is something he could learn from Josi.
AJo is good with Edvinsson , let's just keep that way

Josi's 34...making 9M this yr...and for the next 3...you want to pay him 9M/yr through his 37th bday?

He's a captain in Nashville. He has a full no movement clause.

What makes you want him?

What makes you think they want to trade him?

What makes you think he would accept a trade?

I do like the idea of a guy who can shoot like him next to Seider, though..

Mario Ferraro seems like he could be a good fit next to Seider.

A minute-munching, shot-blocking defenseman who has drawn trade interest in the past, Ferraro is a valuable commodity. Signed through the end of next season at a $3.25 million cap hit, the 26-year-old is a strong puck mover and penalty killer with a competitive streak to match.

He could be a defensive rock to unlock seider offensively. He is a bit of black hole offensively but he could be an excellent defensive complement.

Next year he could give McLellan the option to run Edvinsson-Seider and Ferarro could be the defensive presence next to ASP.

If Al Jo continues to thrive he could also slot down on the 3rd pair.

Either way he creates options and would give this team a lot of different looks on the backend.

Kinda silly....we draft and develop a guy who looks to be exceeding expectations, exactly what we have all been clamoring for, and your opinion is to quickly deal him away...

If anything, the emergence of Kasper/Johansson makes guts like Wallinder/Biuim/MBN more expendable to fill current holes

It’s funny to me someone made a thread asking if the guy Johansson has never played with (Mo) is his long term partner, and not the guy he’s actually playing really well with right now (Ed).

i'm not necessarily saying i want it to happen. but if we want to add something like a quality 2c or top 4 d, which one of larkin/raymond/seider/edvinsson/kasper/johansson are you willing to trade?

Kasper has been a top 5 performing forward every night he’s been on that top line and gives them a defensive ace they never had.

AlJo has been a top 3 defenseman just about every night he’s been paired with Edvinsson.

They’ve been legitimately good as rookies and you’re talking about using them as trade bait.

…What the f***?

Same thing was happening when Seider played with Walman.

I pushed against it before, but maybe Chychrun WOULD be a good partner for Mo…

At some point (in the very near future) we have to make a trade to upgrade our front end.

We have an embarrassment of riches in blue line prospects and young stud defenders. There is not enough room for all of them.

Sometimes you have to take your excess livestock to market.

Wallinder and Buium and Tuomisto then. Use those guys as trade chips. I think Buium is the only one that might punch above his draft position.

AlJo was considered Grand Rapids best defenseman on a team that had a Edvinsson last year. He’s been super steady and effective playing with Ed. He’s cost controlled. And he fits in with the team core at his age.

It’s a lot harder and more expensive to find a solid top 4 defender than a top 6 forward. We are just seeing AlJo succeed in that role as a top 4 guy now. Why the hell would we move him? Just trade futures or prospects to upgrade at forward. Find someone in free agency and dump Tank. The cap is going way up. Someone would take him just to reach the floor.

look man. i'm not out here proposing johansson for cozens trades. i'm just saying out of all our roster players he's the one with the most value and is the least untouchable. again, out of larkin/raymond/seider/edvinsson/kasper/johansson, which one are you trading for a high end player?

Well, wtf.

Going into the yr it looked like we had 3 of our 4 top-4 long-term core D in the organization (Seider, Ed, ASP)...and we still needed to add one more elite D.

Now it looks like we may actually already have all 4 in place, and might not need to add another elite D.

If you want to focus on the actual pairings...yada...whatever.

If you actually do the math on next yr's cap space...signing Chychrun (9M) and Marner/Rantanen (14M) is not impossible.

We're not getting anymore top-5 picks. Our system's still 2 or 3 elite players away from someday being legit SC contenders. We don't want to trade away any of our draft picks that are kicking ass.

Why the hell not sign them?

**It's very possible to get everything we need without making any big trades..**

Talbot, Cossa (Augustine in for Talbot in a yr or two)

Chychrun---Seider
Edvinsson---Johansson
Chiarot---ASP (Wallinder/Buium in for Chiarot next yr)

Kasper---Larkin---Raymond
DeBrincat---Danielson---Marner/Rantanen
Soderblom---Veleno---Mazur
Ras---Copp/Compher/Berggren (Buchelnikov bumps someone next yr...Finnie/Kiiskinen/Lombardi all coming)

Cap goes up again next yr (Kyle Connor is a FA)..

Can always move Kasper back to C if you want..

I think you're possibly right...if that was the cost then I'd simply not make that trade...

If MBN plus a 1st plus Rasmussen isn't good enough then so be it..

We're all perhaps overglorfying Johansson at the moment, but it's precisely later rd picks "over shooting" expectations that we desperately need..

Here’s my take:

AlJo has looked great in a very small sample size with Edvisson so far. Is it all on him, or is Simon the type of player who makes his partners look better? It’s way too soon to know for sure. Certainly premature to assume he can handle top pairing minutes with soul-crushing deployment like Seider does.

Also consider that not long ago he was not even rated as highly even by us as some of his peers like Wallinder, Buium, and Tuomisto. All those players were expected to be better than him and still may be. We can’t keep them all if they start hitting. That’s part of the reason we traded Andrew Gibson, too many guys already ahead.

My thoughts, I think if he keeps up this play he will price himself out of Detroit. Edvinsson will be due for a big raise in the 8-9M range or more. ASP will need big money too if he’s what we hope he will be. Paying 4 defenseman big dollars isn’t ideal and probably not the best. Even with the cap going up by almost 20M the next 2 years we have to be smart. AlJo is a prime guy who can get excellent trade value while having in-house cheap replacements already set up. He’s not a core guy imo and is probably long term best utilized trading for a top 6 forward than paying a big contract to keep around as a highly paid 4D behind Seider, Edvinsson, and ASP. If we are paying Seider 8.55M, and Edvinsson and ASP with the high cap probably 8.5-9.5M that’s already 25.5M-27.5M of the cap tied up in 3 defenseman. Do we really want to invest another 6-7M more for a 4D. Even at a projected cap of 113.5M for 2027-28 that’s around 30% of the cap on just your top 4 D. Then you have to figure Larkin, Raymond, whichever goalie hits between Cossa and Augustine, Kasper will need to be paid if he keeps it up, Danielson if he is what we hope he will be, DBC……. Cap runs out really fast and players will cost a LOT more starting this offseason knowing that all the teams will have loads of cap to spend for the next 4 years.
