$11.2 billion bet on U.S. racing in 2024. That mark is down $400 million from 2023.

The average purse distribution per race set an industry record at $40,593.

BARNES is named after Jimmy Barnes, Bob Baffert's longtime assistant and cost $3.2 million. Won his debut. The San Vincente is not an official Kentucky Derby prep but Baffert has tried this route in the past.

BARNES opened it up with a stretch drive that decimated the competition. He was sent off the co-even money favorite. No match. Bon Baffert finished 2-2 with ROMANESQUE, a $675,000 purchase, placing at 7-to-1. A healthy $14 exacta with Baffert's horses.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 8: Cyclone State (Luis Rivera. Jr./Chad Summers) won the $150,000 Jerome Stakes and with it earned 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. He may go to Saudi Arabia next time out. The breeder is from Iowa, hence the name.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: Exceeded $13 million which I believe was the industry leader in North America today.
  • Rainbow Six: Mandatory payout on Sunday and the total could reach $3,000,000.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 9: Coal Battle (Juan Vargas/Lonnie Briley) won the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes and with it earned 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The popular Arkansas route to Kentucky includes this first of four Derby preps (also the Southwest, the Rebel and the Arkansas Derby). Coal Battle has won at smaller tracks in Louisiana and Oklahoma but now is among the early big players for the Run for the Roses after a comfortable victory today.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Exceeded $11 million.
  • Juan Hernandez rode five winners including three times for Bob Baffert. His successful day finished 9 5-2-1.
  • Bob Baffert entered four races and won each. In two of the races, he finished 1-2. In total, he finished 7 4-2-0.
  • Race 5: Barnes (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,000 San Vicente Stakes defeating a small field which included stable-mate and runner-up Romanesque (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) who was sent off 7-to-1. Barnes, names for Baffert's assistant Jimmy Barnes, cost $3.2 million and is now 2-for-2. Baffert has won this race 14 times.

  • Race 9: Richi (Kazushi Kimura/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Las Flores Stakes. Richi is a multiple-graded stakes winner in his home country of Chile. He won off a long layoff following his U.S. debut in June 2024.

The finalists for the Eclipse Awards are now confirmed. Horse of the Year will be announced that night, January 23.

Jockey of the Year should be easy as Flavien Prat set incredible totals. Irad Ortiz, Jr., winner five of the past six years, and Tyler Gaffalione, a prior winner for Apprentice of the Year, were also nominated. Good for Gaffalione for reaching this level, the kid is a star as I said from his earliest days.

Trainer of the Year, no surprises with Chad Brown, Brad Cox and Kenny McPeek honored. Cox remains my pick but the voters seem to be looking elsewhere.
