I do have to give it to him that he has a very sterling international record.

Hate him and call him overrated if you want but his play and success in the international game is very strong.

As a Winnipegger, I apologize to the international hockey community that a Winnipeg media outlet actually employs Gary Lawless.

Toews is already a better international player than Gretzky ever was. Look at who Gretzky played with and look at who Toews plays with. Toews actually has to carry his team on his back unlike Gretzky who had half of his work done for him. And the wins speak for themselves. In an NHL game I'd take Gretzky every time, but in an international game I'd take Toews every time.

P.S. World Junior shootout. Gretzky wasn't even good enough to get a shot in Nagano. Enough said.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've read on this board in a while.

Which is why I'm hoping my sarcasm meter is broken.

if you actually watch the games, yes toews is always an effective player, though he doesnt put up the points

but hey at the end of the day, you still gotta produce the points, the scoreboard is what makes you win

So first Toews gets the lion's share of the credit for Chicago's Stanley Cups and now he also gets it for Canada's international dominance. Sounds legit, since those teams, Canada in particular, are full of scrubs except for Super Toews... Using the number of won championship to prove individual players' qualities is always a bit silly but even more so when we talking about a team like Canada which would have a very good shot even if they played their B team, let alone their A team without Toews (or any other star). If you look at say the Bruins in 2011 you can say quite confidently that they wouldn't have won it without Thomas. Can anyone honestly say that Canada would have almost certainly not won in Sochi or Vancouver without Toews? Chances are they would have won even if Craig Adams had replaced Toews. :D

This is also kind of a silly argument since that could be said of everyone of Canada's players. Just cause Canada would still win without Crosby doesn't take away him being a great player for this country. The other argument that Toews is just a piece is just as flawed as Lawless. Can hate him but still being the best player on the under18 team, then being a player the jr team probably doesn't win gold without then throw in best forward at one Olympics , a guy Babcock says is his top performer and now (I know it's early and doesn't mean much) but tied for the points lead in this World Cup maybe he just is a top international player. The thread was still meant to ask, other the Crosby who in this era would be up there

Great post.

Love seeing Toews continue to get the credit he deserves. Guy simply does everything great on and off the ice.
