So Toews has jumped past Crosby and is now being compared (by a serious journalist) to Gretzky, with a straight face. Exhibit A why being "in" hockey doesn't necessarily mean you know more than us couch sitters.

Oh my god, a Gary Lawless article on a local boy Winnipegger Jonathan Toews. What a surprise he's licking Toews boots.

Lets ignore the fact that gretzky had nearly as many goals as toews has points and just use team wins. While also ignoring that gretzky was also playing when every top country was in the prime of there international games while toews is playing when only 1 or 2 teams on good years is a contender.

That's just not true. USA, Finland even Sweden were still in their baby shoes during 80's and early 90's compared to where they are today. In the 80's it was all about USSR and Canada. Granted USSR was a machine, better than anything Canada has faced in the past 10 years.

But yeah the article is pretty bad.

The Gretz comparison is where he totally lost me.
I don"t think there's a comparison to Crosby as an overall player but as far as just international success I do see room for some debate. If you count everything going back to U18 Toews has had some pretty big games. At the top I'd put the shootout win over the Americans. Crosby still has scored one of the biggest goals in Canadian hockey history but I'm not sure who else in this generation would be up there

Toews is already a better international player than Gretzky ever was. Look at who Gretzky played with and look at who Toews plays with. Toews actually has to carry his team on his back unlike Gretzky who had half of his work done for him. And the wins speak for themselves. In an NHL game I'd take Gretzky every time, but in an international game I'd take Toews every time.

P.S. World Junior shootout. Gretzky wasn't even good enough to get a shot in Nagano. Enough said.

My god this guy gets overrated.

If he was Finnish and drafted by the Coyotes he'd be talked about like Mikko Koivu or David Krejci.

Its pretty clear Toews is even better than we previously thought . I mean look how... normal Patrick Kane looked without him.

Toews is a good player and plays a valuable role for Canada. He is obviously not Gretzky, a guy who lead every international tournament in which he participated in scoring until he was 35. He's not even as valuable as Crosby, thought that is closer.

Ummm Crosby, Marchand, Bergeron, Duchene and Doughty are plugs I guess. He is good and 4 goals so far but 2 were in a game that no one wanted to hit each other.

Cross era comparisons are pointless, but who in this era has done more than Toews in international competitions?

Toews is a great player but his value isn't goals and assists. He's super versatile and is a winner. Plays almost like a late career Yzerman or a Bob Gainey. He's got great hands too but I think the ability to play him in all situations and at any point in the game makes him one of Canada's most important players.

Don't agree with the Gretzky comparison when you have Sid on the team.

Toews:
27 points in 34 games senior
21 points in 18 games junior
Total: 48 points in 52 games

Crosby:
41 points in 34 games senior
20 points in 17 games junior
Total: 61 points in 51 games

So first Toews gets the lion's share of the credit for Chicago's Stanley Cups and now he also gets it for Canada's international dominance. Sounds legit, since those teams, Canada in particular, are full of scrubs except for Super Toews... Using the number of won championship to prove individual players' qualities is always a bit silly but even more so when we talking about a team like Canada which would have a very good shot even if they played their B team, let alone their A team without Toews (or any other star). If you look at say the Bruins in 2011 you can say quite confidently that they wouldn't have won it without Thomas. Can anyone honestly say that Canada would have almost certainly not won in Sochi or Vancouver without Toews? Chances are they would have won even if Craig Adams had replaced Toews. :D
