Insane Gretzky Stat

I’m sure that all of Gretzky’s accomplishments have been discussed here, but I couldn’t find a thread mentioning this particular stat, one I find mind-blowing.

Wayne Gretzky had more 4-point games (217) than he had 0-point games (203).

Ridiculous.

Why do I even get surprised anymore by this? That's just surreal. You know what, I am actually not surprised at all. And he would have had some goose-eggs on a more regular basis in his Rangers uniform, and yet that still didn't surpass the amount of 4 point games. How is this even possible?

Prior to the 1997-98 season, it was true Gretzky had more 4+ point than 0-point games.

I think that Mario Lemieux in 1988-89 might hold the record for most 4+ point games in a season, with 26 (eight 0-point games).

I remember watching a documentary on Gretzky and seeing that in 85-86 he would have won the scoring title by 22 points, with his assists alone. They said it would be the equivalent to winning the batting title hitting .700

Disregarding himself, in 1985-86 he also would have had the highest scoring season of all time in NHL history (by 11 points) if he hadn't scored a single goal all season.

Oh damn, looks like you're right. I had seen 203 see on some stat site, I thought I had verified it on a second source, but clearly not.

I used the game logs on Hockey Reference, sorted each season’s games by points, so it’s possible some mistake slipped in and/or that the data had some errors.

Indeed it is incredible. You could pat yourself on the back if you were one of the guys shutting him out the 15 times it happened between 1982-83 and 1985-86.

I apologize - you're right, it's 266 regular season games. For whatever reason, the count showed up fluky when I looked it up on my phone initially. Went back to it again now and it's:

0 point games:

266 regular season
35 playoffs


4+ point games

217 regular season
26 playoffs

For fun, here are the 3+ point games:

If Gretzky retired after the 1996-1997 season (instead of playing 2 more years) - he'd have 207 0 point games in the regular season vs 214 games of 4+ points.

If Lemieux had retired after the 2000-2001 season - he'd have 115 4+ point games to 113 0 point games.

So - yes. Pretty amazing
