I'm interested in hearing Islander's fans opinion on Ty Wishart. I am a Vancouver fan and think he might be a decent replacement for Alberts as our 7/8th dman. He grew up out here and had a pretty successful junior career in Prince George (a northern BC town).

Is he capable of playing NHL minutes? He's big, but does he have any physicality to his game? Was he caught in a numbers game in LI or can he be considered a bust?

Just curious, any info on him would be much appreciated - Cheers.

He didn't look bad when he played those 20 games when he got traded here. Since then he played like crap in the minors. Not sure he's really more than a #7-8 option at this point in his career.

Wishart probably had his best season since being traded here. Although that isn't saying much. The past two years he was notorious for being out of position and leaving his partner (de Haan) out to dry. This season he played a lot better, scored 7 goals and was better defensively. Its possible that he had a breakout season. He is big, but plays soft. He dropped the gloves a few times this year but seriously cannot fight. The one thing that bothered me this season about his game is that he wouldn't use his size in front of the net. His +/- was EVEN this year (Suprisingly) but the SoundTigers gave up a ton of goals this year and for a guy who was as big as he was, he played soft in front of the net; didn't help out his goaltender much.

For those reasons, I believe the Islanders will bring him back, but as a permanent resident in Bridgeport. He is not an NHL player.

Send us a 5th and he's yours - or as a simpleton politician said a few years ago (and I'm paraphrasing here) - "you have to trade for him to find out what's in him" . . .

Wishart joins my hometown team in Germany. Anybody here with a little scouting report?

I gotta be honest, I can see him having big problems on the big ice.

On the other hand, he has some attributes that generally lead to success in European leagues.

All in all, do expect some really bad stuff along the way. He'll need a bit of an adjustment, but he's not an unintelligent player and he can make so real good passes.

Despite his size though, he's anything but a physical player. Don't expect much bang.

Lock him in a cage and poke him with sharp sticks in a basement for two months, giving him nothing but bread, water and Chris Pronger highlights to pass the time. He may come out with enough aggression to use what he's got after that.

I called the Roloson-for-Wishart swap a few days before it happened, thinking a 6'4" ex-1st rounder RFA would help the Isles' defense, when only a few years later, he magically slid all the way down the depth chart and the learning curve like the Banana Splits.

Soft as eggs, he'll occasionally give you a nosebleed defensively, but he's good for a few smart breakout passes.
