How gud?

Steve Mason started out his career very strong with a good albeit not great rookie season. Then he struggled mightily until he was traded to the Flyers where he actually posted good numbers until his final season. He plays one last season with the jets in a backup role in which he was just okay.

How'd you rate his career?

He had some peaks and valleys, but better than most throughout his career. Good but far from great, if that makes sense.

Columbus wasn't a bad team that year though, fine depth and nasty to play against with many good defensive players under Hitchcock. The rest of his time there he was between below average and awful.

He was a goalie who was either very good or very bad. Rarely did he even land in the middle.

This is how i'd describe him. He had some very good moments, but a lot of very bad ones as well. Which, when it comes to a starting goaltender...those kind of peaks and valleys are "bad" overall. Hard to rely on.

So i'd say "bad" on balance. Even if he had plenty of good stretches.

I know he had a better career than this but when his name comes up I instantly remember the playoff goal he allowed from parking lot.
