yea baby a 22 man roster !! lets acrru that cap space ...

lili/sandin should still yoyo up and down so that that number is much higher by christmas time. by christmas time,

Sucks but weirdly works out perfectly for us.

Lets us keep both Engvall and Lilly up, and gets Bunting up onto the Tavares line where he's probably a better option than mikky.

Edit: didn't even realize that LTIR would let us keep Brooksie too. Weirdly perfect injury as bad as that sounds.
I would imagine all of Semyenov/Sandin/Liljegren go down on off days to accrue space?

Sucks to hear about his injury. He’s not top six forward material by any stretch of the imagination, so offensively, not a loss at all.

He demanded to be traded in the off season, in retrospect, they probably should have. It’d be one thing if he produced at a high level, but he is the epitome of the black hole of offense.

Sucks because of his injury, but good for Cap reasons.

Brooks and Engvall are saved from the waiver wire. By the time Mikheyev is back, someone else could be out. It could be awhile before they have to actually trim the roster.

Surprised nobody is talking about how dirty of a play that is. Isn't that the type of hit they're trying to weed out as well? Penalties all pre-season for those.

If we're under the cap before we place him there we do.
Cool. So the move is to send down everyone who’s waiver eligible, put Mik on LTIR then bring them back up I guess. If that’s just Sandin and Lilly does that get us there or do they have to sneak one of brooks or Engvall down as well?

Bad luck. He looked better this year. Can this guy ever catch a break.

Good luck. At least it happened before potentially losing Brooks on the waivers. Also liljegren can stay up.
Yeah, cool. Liljegren can work on his press box relaxing poses for another season while he waits for a job to be given to him. Awesome.

Sucks but also weirdly perfect makes him affordable next year if he wants to stay.

With Mik out we start the new season without our 4 LWers (Hyman, Gally, Foligno, Jumbo) who finished last season. Could be cause for concern but Ritchie and Bunting so far looking good.

Never want to see a player get hurt, and he's had a great camp these past few weeks. However, from his demands standpoint (wanting top 6 ice time), and a salary standpoint... I've often said it makes sense to move on from him. Between Brooks and Engvall they're more than capable of filling the void left by Mikheyev. In fact, they both play C / can play center when need be too. I'd have to think one of Brooks, Engvall is in at 4C now, and the pieces fall more naturally into place

Hyman, sure

Losing any of Thornton, Gally or Foligno is closer to cause for celebration than concern.

Jumbo sure. Foligno and Gally were more serviceable. Don't forget Leafs went "all-in" with that cast of LWers so if losing them is cause for celebration, not sure what that says about Leafs' management's ability to assess their talent.

Keefe: Mikheyev hand injury could be long-term - TSN.ca

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev left Saturday's pre-season game against the Ottawa Senators with a hand injury and did not return.

TSN's Kristen Shilton tweets Mikheyev got crunched into the boards towards the end of the first period.

After the game, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters that Mikheyev's injury is expected to keep him out long-term.

"We'll know more on Monday, but it's not looking like it will be short term at this point ... It's a big loss. He's had a great camp. He's a good player for us, does a lot of things for us, but we have a lot of depth. We've had a lot of guys with good camps. We have a lot guys already down with the Marlies that had good camps. We have guys that are still with us here that didn't play tonight, who have had good camps so it's going to create opportunities for others to step up," Keefe said.

Maple Leafs wrap up pre-season with a win and a loss. Ilya Mikheyev’s hand injury could be long term | The Star

It appears winger Ilya Mikheyev will be lost for some time after a hand injury in a first-period fall.

“We’ll know more on Monday, but it’s not looking like it’s going to be short-term,” coach Sheldon Keefe said after the game. “It’s a big loss, and he’s had a great camp. He’s a great player for us.”

...........................

But the Mikheyev injury mixed the lines and now could have an effect on roster spots. He had been slotted in for a second-line role, which now could end up going to Michael Bunting.

The Leafs have until 5 p.m. Monday to get under the $81.5-million (U.S.) salary cap. So, who sat out Saturday may have been more telling than who played. Defenceman Timothy Liljegren and forwards Kirill Semyonov, Adam Brooks and Michael Amadio were healthy scratches.

While teams are allowed 23 on the roster, the Leafs can only fit 21 under the restrictive cap — though Mikheyev’s injury could change the equation. If placed on long-term injured reserve – meaning he’d miss at least 10 games and 24 days — his $1.645-million cap hit might save a job or two for now.

“Some decisions, frankly, are controlled by the salary cap,” Keefe said. “But the situation now changes, depending on what happens with the Mikheyev situation.”

Waiving a veteran player to move him comes with risk.

“That’s part of our reality,” said Keefe. “We’re not the only team in the NHL that’s dealing with that. There’s just a lot of things that happen like that, that are somewhat out of your control — certainly out of my control — and we just got to deal with that.”

Liljegren and Semyonov can be sent to the AHL’s Marlies without waivers. Brooks and Amadio would need to be put on waivers Sunday. Kurtis Gabriel and Alex Biega were on Saturday. Any team has until 2 p.m. Sunday to claim them.
