You don't always expect France, Germany and, some what, the Swiss to come out and play great games against some of the better hockey nations. But they did step up. There were some very entertaining games.

US vs Russia, Sweden vs Russia, US vs Sweden were among some really good games played.

One of the worst performance by czechs and slovaks can not be overtaken by french and german effort. So therefore I would say there was less quality but this is what we might have used to it at least for a while.

Overall it was a good tourney imo, and good for french hockey. Still too many low level matches for half of the tourney.

I enjoyed it, a lot more than in the past.

Some good upsets, some great games between 2 big countries (both Canada's semifinal and the gold medal game were pretty darn good).

Also it was an interesting tournament for us Finns too, not used to seeing our team struggle against teams like Norway, Slovenia and of course France.

I tend to agree. This year there were only four gold medal contenders in CAN, SWE, RUS and USA. Czechs and Finns were meh and I don't even want to talk about how bad Slovaks were. Pre 2010 I've always felt that any former big 7 team can win gold, this year number dropped to 4.

Although Canadian it's the best possible result. The more often other teams win the WC the better it is for the game.

It was really good. The semi final between CAN-RUS and the final was great. I think settling the tourney on a shootout is bush league but I'm happy King Joff got MVP

i was at can-rus and the gold medal game, great crowd, drunk russians/swedes everywhere  it was a nice little 4 day vacation for me. bonus points for the russian in an santa outfit running around at the upper decks waving his flag... it was definitively not a offical mascot

What a crapppy way for the Golf Medal game to be decided. :(

Kind of a bummer.

No disrespect to Sweden. I'm a Canadian and super happy for Sweden! Sweden deserves it, I just wish if we lost it was in an OT.

Same sentiment from the WJC when Canada lost to the US. The overtime was so awesome, you just wish you could see hockey and not a skills competition decide the game.

Again, congrats to Sweden.

You can see the growth (and decline) in hockey in different nations though!

A little late but I thought I'd add my 2 cents. As an American who has followed this tournament for years, I always found it difficult to find any fellow fans in the US who care about it. So, it was a blast to be in Cologne and Paris this year in person and be surrounded by passionate hockey fans who lived and died with their teams results. I think the tide is turning in the US a little bit with the TV coverage of all the US games and more print coverage as well, far more fans are aware of the tourney and follow the results.
Cologne was incredible. Great city, great food, great hockey atmosphere. Hats off to the Latvian, Slovak, Danish and Russian fans who turned up in huge numbers. The German fans were amazing. The rink was a great venue. Wasn't a fan of the fan fest thing outside the rink. Paris is Paris and in my humble opinion the best city to visit in the world. Went to a France game and the atmosphere was light, fun and electric. Went to a Canada game as well and the Canadian fans were out in full force. So many great bars within a short walk in Bercy, what a place to have this.
Great experience, hope I get a chance to go to another.

Köln had more US fans because we just have so many Americans living in west Germany. Usually there's hardly any. But I hope it gets better

I think I worded that part of my post poorly. Didn't mean there were a lot of American fans, just fans in general. Although, we kind of expected to be pretty much the only US fans, not the case at all. Also neat to meet a few American fans not from the US but who were there rooting for the US because they have kids there or went to school there or admired the US generally.

No championship where the winner is determined by SO is good enough but for me overall it went better than expected. I'm particularly happy with the success of Sweden and Finland. They looked horrid in the beginning. No idea how they picked it up from there.

Sweden had a good team and was further strengthened by Bäckström and Lundqvist in the end of the group stage. Finland's team was particularly weak this year, it was lucky to face the US in the quarterfinals instead of some better team.

Yea I don't think anyone here in Sweden wanted to win it in SO either. Kind of takes out the "Best team wins" thing and goes more towards "Who has the best daredevil puck wizards?"

Yeah that was relatively unique for a worlds to have so many foreigners cheering for the US.

I enjoyed the tournament. Always a fun tournament to watch. Still having a winner decided with a shootout for a major tournament has to be changed no matter the winner.
