If the current 2011 thru 2016 LA Kings were an old school Punk band, who would they be? This was a serious Christmas discussion I had with a few friends. Yes there were drinks...
The consensus was they would either be Black Flag as there are a few different versions and all were were great The Keith Morris version The Dez Cadena version (My favorite), Then the Henry Rollins version all powerful all great but different in intensity and subtleties.
I also thought the Kings being the singular game plan of one man Darryl Sutter (Or DL take your pic) might also be like Fear lead by Lea Ving. They are often nfuriating to the rest of the crowd, but strong, talented, classless and crued. Simultaneously they were well honed and far more skilled than any ever gave them credit for. Like the Kings are.

This thread may be dead in the water but I know there a lot of Old School punks who love hockey. Not the Duck poser kind of punks but old LA/H/C punks.

Just a pondering... Discuss.

the dead kennedys. because sometimes they are just too something to something? :yo::)

I'm not familiar with punk rock, is there a band called Knee to your Head? Elbow to your Head could also work. Two very **** authority inspired names.

I'd say the Keith Morris version of Black Flag, mainly due to "Nervous Breakdown" which is what I'm sure the Kings cause for opposing teams, and sometimes us.

Black Flag is a good comparison.

That or the Germs, or Red Kross, or Sacharine Trust, or Minutemen.

But in all honesty, I'd compare them to Destruction Unit:

If we're broadening scope beyond OCHC, then I'd say Zen Arcade era Husker Du. Heavy, trying to play faster than they probably should with lots of consistency track-to-track (shift-to-shift).

Title Fight's 'Floral Green' album came out in 2012, but it's heavy(ish), slow and self-destructive.

When the Kings are on their game, New Bomb Turks 'Automatic Teller' and 'Point A to Point Blank' come to mind. And 'Sucker Punch' would be the main boards perception of Brownie.

Not necessarily that the Kings are Napalm Death(they're way too fast to really represent the Kings' playing style. Also, ND isn't straight up Punk.), but I feel like the lyrics of this song kinda represent how we see the Kings v. how the rest of the world(HF/other message boards and the hockey media at large) views the Kings:

The lyrics for those unaccustomed to Grind/Death vocals:

You come to us and criticize
Without prior inspection
Judge us as a waste of time
An incorrect perception

Just a noise - your shallow view
An opinion I find misconstrued
There's probably more thought in what we do
Than a large part of what appeals to you

Why should we? - Why the need to justify?
Only in others' presence are you motivated to jeer and jibe
Everybody has the right to opinionize
But to us your pettiness is used to occupy your tiny minds

Extremity retained- never fall into your line

When I started to think about this I thought of Descendants or Bad Religion due to Milo or Greg aka DL being smarter than your normal frontmen.

I love the responses this got. I wasn't sure of it's worth on the site but it was a slow hockey news day when I posted it. My favorite punk bands are Youth Brigade, Fear and Black Flag. I have been a lover of old school punk since back in the day. Raji's, The Masque, Cathay De Grande, Madame Wongs...
I almost got my head bashed in outside of Godzillas for having long hair. When some of the guys from TSOL and Black Flag let their hair grow out I loved it. That was punk going against the punks uniform. I also love UK Death Rock The Damned, Lords of The New Church... but I wanted to keep this North American. I also had to disqualify my favorites Youth Brigade as they hail from Toronto and there were enough great LA/HC bands to choose from. Although Youth Brigades Stern Brothers probably love and know more about hockey than I ever will.
I'm glad some of you got why I also thought of Fear as a good one as well. Time to go.. Hope the Kings are ready to show the Flames some "Damage".

Oi
