If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

Are there going to be some stud goalies suddenly available at some point this summer?
Same junk available now, will be the same junk in September minus some trash that is signed elsewhere.

The plan is to build from the net out, draft high, develop well and bring in your prospects to replace players that walk :sarcasm:

It is becoming clear that some teams figure if you don't have a Vasi, Demko, Shesterkin you go cheap in goal. How bad must Mrazek be if we were willing to drop 15 slots to 38 to dump him and then go after Murray ??

Who knows, perhaps Dubas is playing 3D chess with the rest of the league in order to lower the price of the guy he really wants.

All I know is whatever option he chooses, if it does not work, he better be on or under the next bus to the Soo.
And yet the Dubists are playing offence for anyone nervous about it.

Everyone knows that once all the UFA goalies sign others magically appear

That’s basically it.

Tbh I think committing to any goalie that’s available right now for more than 2 years is a big risk with Mrazek-like fallout.

Unfortunately there might be the need to keep a band-aid on the position until something high end comes available.

Maybe the jets have another bad year and Hellebyuck’s name pops up on the trade deadline radar.

Well, his agent said that he has zero interest in playing for the Leafs. He is foucused on playing for the Ducks.
It's really bad for a player to say they don't want to play for a team. It turns the whole fan base against them. It's good pr to maintain you want to stay even after you've been traded, but of course you're extremely happy and very excited to play in your new city

The longer Dubas waits, the more leverage Campbell gets.

Husso, Gibson, Varlamov, Fleury already (reportedly) off the market.
Husso and Fleury for sure. I'm 50/50 on the other 2.
Shrewd GMs working for the best deal. At least that's my hope as I would like either of them here

How is that any “plan” that deserves praise? I’ve used the word scrambling, but band aid seems apt as well. We can always do something later in the season, but uncertainty doesn’t warrant comfort with what is happening. The real risk, you band aid now and then way overpay later to save the season.

What's funny is how quiet they are on what signing Darcy Kuemper / re-signing Jack Campbell to big contracts would do for the Leafs?

I guess they need to find out what Dubas does first before actually formulating an opinion of their own.

In the meantime let's try and pretend that not having both a starter and a backup entering a weak UFA martket is a total stroke of genius!

The irony here is he’s rightfully getting praise for dumping a bad goalie at the draft, but it means we are even thinner now. Mrazek’s gone woohoo, you’re going to go with Kallgren as a backup? That’s risky stuff as well, he was folding bad after a decent start, has zero pedigree, a complete question mark.

C'mon guys, he's just exploiting inefficiencies in the market. The difference between a top drawer goalie like a Shesterkin or Saros or Vasilevskiy and a mid range NHL goalie is miniscule. It's like less than 1 save (of a goal) per game. We've worked it out that's just 82 saves per season. What is 82 saves per season worth? You guessed it: a 7th round pick. <taps temple>

This is true. I expect a resolve on our goaltending by Thursday at the latest and if it’s not I’m a bit worried.

Yeah I agree when especially when you have exclusive negotiating rights to one of the two goalies left on the market it's a big miss if you don't have it settled by then

I never said that it was a plan that deserves praise. It’s really just making the best out of a mediocre situation without crippling the team.

I can’t say I would be excited if they moved a pick for Husso’s rights and then gave him that contract. Same with Georgiev. MAF was my preferred target but you can’t do anything about him re-signing in Minny.

At this rate I’m more happy that they’re not spending assets on mediocre goaltending because that’s all that is available.

Why would anyone Dubas fans or whiners or the normal posters make up their minds about something that hasn't happened?

They are no where near the cap. They don't have to move him and their buyout gets significantly easier next year. They'll just bury him I'm in the AHL and buy him out after this year

If you think they're going to give up a bunch to then give us a massive discount your kidding yourself.

July 14 we become just as desperate and at that point they've made the decision to not buy him out

Some people will do anything to keep their dubas delusions
FYI frank servelli reported OTT has stated a buyout for Murray as the last option.
Not looking likely at this point but when the post you replied to was made it was fully plausible

That's my thinking. They need to find a way to pay top dollar for a legit option, not look for sweeteners to take on more junk.
Problem is the clock is continually ticking waiting for the right solution to present itself.
Such a mess, seems like such a waste.

Sorry, no you didn’t, just this general idea that some master plan is at work here and we have to patiently wait for it too unfold. I’ll bet it all Dubas didn’t think he’d be sitting here a few months ago. We are making the best out of a mediocre situation, that’s all I’m saying here. Let’s see what he does, I just hope we don’t overpay or risk it all on unnerving odds.

This is what’s interesting with the Murray rumours. I really dislike the idea of him starting (im guessing he’s a backup here), but rather than pay assets in a trade or ufa, you acquire An asset with the goalie

So gamble on murray bounce back (super nervous) but get an asset back? Has to be a good asset but that’s an intriguing play given what’s out there in free agency

I think the plan B would be Woll, if he remains health, as backup. Kallgren is the plan C

That's my spit all speculation

Literally nobody has said this. You're just not getting a Shesterkin, Vasilevsky, or Saros through trade or free agency. 2 of those 3 were obtained by those teams fluking out on a lucky 4th round pick a decade ago. The differences between the available goalies being discussed here are much smaller and their future impact much less predictable than many here want to admit.

Makes sense. I think waiting on a buyout for next year would make sense anyways.

I don't think they're going to be as desperate as people think however. They're not going to give him away with A+ assets and retention
