If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

My guess - the conversation basically starts with Dubas saying we value you as a tandem goalie and are prepared to pay you as such. its fine if Jack or another team thinks otherwise but the Leafs can't get into that bidding war.

And I'm sure jacks camp is telling him to enjoy Matt Murray in that case.

We seem to play hardball for the dumbest shit

Jack Campbell hardball, Zach Hymans 8th year hardball

Petr Mrazek here's 3.8 a year with a no Trade.

As in, he won't be the clear starter. We'll see what happens but there's probably interest in getting him with an asset in some way. It's possible there's 75% retention with a 3rd team too. I don't think the plan is to get him to start 50 games for us.
At that cap hit, it could make sense to run a cheap tandem, but all that retention should cost them so much it isn't worth it.

Ottawa looks better off buying him out this offseason or the next, so for them to retain in a trade seams like it'd cost some, plus the third party retention.
Would you rather have Campbell or Murray? I’d stick with Jack, warts too but Murray is such a crap shoot. I guess Murray could have higher upside if it all worked out. What a gamble.
Watching them both I'd say Jack has the greater upside tbh. Murray wasn't that great in Pittsburgh but was surprisingly very stable & consistent behind a strong team to win 2 cups; fleury was so inconsistent & unreliable at times that average (but consistent) joe was all they needed.

but watching him since I don't really know what to think about him.

If they can somehow get him closer to 25% of his 6.25m cap hit, great; they can form a cheap tandem and improve the team in front of them, you can win a cup that way. I just think it's so unlikely they could do this without giving up too many assets, unless he's bought out or Doiron & another GM make pretty bad deals to help the Leafs.

Not sure if I agree. He's supposed to assign values to each goalie option, relative to what he thinks they can bring and stick to his guns.
They paid and valued Mrazek to be a tandem goalie and that blew up.

Wonder if it would be more prudent to lock in the $4 million-ish guy first, than to start with the name with all the question marks.

But if the other guy ain't available until Wednesday and they are worried their backup might get traded elsewhere.

Here is what I am wondering, what if that is the plan - trade for Murray as backup and sign (or trade for) someone else in the $4 million range? Maybe they think they can get Kuemper for $4-$4.5?

If his eye is OK I'd be fine going with that tandem.

Keumper made 5.5 last year with a 4.5 cap hit.

It probably is. But I guess that depends on the market and whose available right now vs who may take a bit longer to negotiate for

Anyone who works with data knows how important it is to help formulate decisions.

It’s not the end all, but it’s part of the puzzle.

You would have to think (hope/pray) that it would be at 50% for Murray.

All Thunder Bay platoon with Blackwood?

Would both for $5.925 be palatable?
Have to admit, a Murray / Blackwood combo, assuming we could get some extra value from the Sens in that deal, would be appealing to me.

Call me crazy but I’d rather have Murray than Campbell. Especially on a 2 year deal rather than committing 5+ years to campbell. I think Murray will be motivated and he’s proven in the playoffs. He’s also only 28 years old. That’s prime for goalie years. It’s not a perfect option, but neither is giving Campbell 5+ years at 5+ million.

Ok you’re going to play the season with 20 players???

And that all assumes you can dump Tavares and Muzzin and take on zero salary back. Not happening…

As mentioned there was an extra roster player, 21 in that scenario, Sandin was there @ 2mil, its was a roster of 12 forwards and 7 dmen, if you think opening day roster is going to be constructed in a fashion where we have boatloads of cap space, I'd love to see your scenario. The point, which I think you missed, it's not that our cap situation won't allow us changes/flexibility, it's that Dubas is choosing to not make significant changes, it's the hill he is choosing to die on.

When you say it can't cant cant be done, I've shown that with willing trade partners, it can can can be done.

Ok but which team will take on Tavares at 10M and same with muzzin without any cap going back?
I’ll wait

I guess Murray has gone through a lot of personal stuff over the last couple of years (Father died, +,+,+), there is a thought that Murrays mental fatigue affected his on ice performance. Its a huge gamble but if he can be the Pitts Pens Murray he's worth it. Last year he was Ottawa's Petr Mrazek.

So again I said you need to have willing trade partners. Why ask a question that no layman fan would know the answer to? Do you have insight into the goings on in each of the 31 war rooms? Let me ask you this which player will score exactly 38 goals next year? I'll wait.

The fact that you choose to NOT read for for the purpose of comprehension, I think you are looking for an argument more than a discussion. Peace, I'm done responding to you.

For the record, for Centers who played 75 games or more JT had the 9th most points and 6th most assists, if you are suggesting that a top 10 center can't be moved , you may want to give your head a shake. How much money did Tampa retain on McDonough's $6.75 mil??

What!? What I’m saying is no team would take that money on without taking any money back. Not one team. I understand you said willing trade partners but what I’m saying is there are no willing trade partners for that type of deal, so you’re whole exercise is futile. You’re operating in a fantasy land…

Gibson said today he had ZERO interest in playing for the leafs

He has a no trade clause so likely Toronto is on it
Well, his agent said that he has zero interest in playing for the Leafs. He is foucused on playing for the Ducks.

The longer Dubas waits, the more leverage Campbell gets.

Husso, Gibson, Varlamov, Fleury already (reportedly) off the market.
