If it's not Jack Campbell who should be the Leafs new #1 goalie?

I would be relatively fine with that
Relatively fine would be the only way to describe that tandem. Haha

I’d do it. By the sounds of it, that’s what they’re going to have to pay Campbell.

I really can’t see Murray being successful under the bright spotlights of Toronto but anything is possible. It’s possible with a good goalie coach, some sports psychology and a change of scenery + going to a good team could help him build himself back again.

I’m higher on Blackwood than most as well. I think a change of scenery would be good for him. I’d take a young goalie with potential over John Gibson who’s looked/played bad for the past 3 years. Gibson is not getting younger and that contract isn’t the best.
Blackwood is RFA after this year too.

Every other team looking for goaltendjng - that mostly received better goaltending than us - is excited about their ability to upgrade this offseason.

But not us. Even though everyone's available and we have all the capapace we need.

The Oilers had significantly better goaltending than us last year.
To be honest IMO none of it's an upgrade over Campbell. It's just moving deck chairs in hopes that one stands out. If I'm a contender that's not what I want.

The guy that just won the cup for a contender is available btw.

What does buying out a retained salary look like? If you were paying Murray $3.125 and wanted to buy out his last year.

Looks like it's 1.3 for two years of you buy him out after next year. Going by half the buyout listed on cap friendly when you buy out his normal deal.

Is that even allowed on a retained deal?

If you're trading for Murray then you're basically saying he is the starter. Even if Ottawa retains salary it doesn't leave much left to sign another goalie as well as fill out the roster. Adding in they are saying that Kalgren is the backup what makes you think he would be a backup or 1A type.

Can we stop with the expected goals and saves for crap. It's means nothing.

It was reported the Leafs we're prepared to spend up to 7 mil on the two goaltending positions. So they'd have close to 4ish mil to spend on other part of the tandem.

Before we go down that dark road and try to figure out what the escapability of the next mistake is, is it possible to consider that Toronto could actually be better off with Woll and Kallgren to start the year than to roll the dice on Murray?

Wonder if it would be more prudent to lock in the $4 million-ish guy first, than to start with the name with all the question marks.

You kinda wonder what the parameters of a Leaf offer look like, or if bridges have simply been burned.

Or if we're still trying to get him to take a "hometown discount" after trying to put it in his ass with the previous negotiation

It's my job to mitigate - not eliminate risks. I can't help myself. I'm sure that it is something that Leaf's management has looked at.

That said, I don't necessarily disagree with you.

I was actually curious about the logistics of buying out a retained salary. Any insight?

Its allowed. Happened to Phaneuf in LA and Ott had to eat 25% of the buyout hit.

I agree. Whoever we get and kallgren/woll. God I hope we don’t get Murray.

Campbell, despite 31 wins for Toronto last season, appears to have priced himself out of Dubas’ cap-strapped reach once league-wide free agency commences Wednesday. Though there’s a shrinking number of teams in the bidding, Edmonton, Buffalo and Washington have ample coin to be in the last round of the goalie pool, which includes Campbell and Darcy Kuemper, fresh off his Stanley Cup in Colorado. The Leafs do not.

By all accounts, Dubas is staying in touch with Campbell’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, but it behooves Team Soupy to see what the wider world can offer. Campbell, who was cheap for a couple of years at $1.6 million US for Dubas, might triple that on the market this week.

Which brings Murray full circle to the Dubas orbit. The goaltender is pricey and perplexing, with two more years at $6.25 million owed by the Ottawa Senators, but trade talks between the clubs heated up at last week’s NHL draft in Montreal.

While it always seems weird to have the opponents in the Battle Of Ontario making deals, it’s hardly unprecedented and the Sens could take back half of Murray’s salary to get a desired return from their rivals. Motivated to move on from him with other goalies in their stable, the Sens will talk with anyone and are likely in serious discussions with Edmonton as well. Smaller pieces on all clubs involved could be in play, too.

When Murray torpedoed a pre-draft trade this week that would’ve sent him to Buffalo, a team not on his list of desired addresses, many interpreted that as trying to engineer a reunion with Dubas or get the chance to play behind Connor McDavid’s flying circus with the Oilers.

The Leafs and most of their supporters loved Campbell the person, but the club isn’t 100% sold on committing to the longer term he seeks. At 30, he’s two years older than Murray and can be high maintenance when in ultra-competitive overdrive, blaming himself for team failures. He has also lost two straight Game 7s in the opening round.

Murray, meanwhile, has won two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh and seemed set there as Marc-Andre Fleury’s successor, but his time in Steeltown didn’t end well and inconsistent play followed him to Ottawa. Injuries and a humiliating demotion were part of his sour 2021-22 season. His record was 5-12-2 and, though he did maintain a .906 save percentage, it’s unknown how a daily dose of heavy media attention in Toronto might adversely affect him. There would also be a new goalie coach awaiting him in Curtis Sanford, his fourth since his last days in Pittsburgh.

.................

And because there’s no such thing as implausibility this time of year, a rumour circulated Sunday that the Leafs could take a run at Jake Allen of the Habs, who is an affordable $2.8 million next year. That’s if Carey Price can manage to get through his many health concerns.

Yeah, no problem wondering it, I just wonder why you wonder that? What is your wondering based on?
If it were another Leaf GM, I'd say that GM is a dumb dumb and thinks Murray is still a good goalie.

I think Kyle knows where Murray is at in his career and this may be a smokescreen.

Tell me if I'm missing something but Upgrades that are seemingly available are
Gibson
Kuemper
Blackwood ( debatable but low cap hit high potential)

Jack is obviously the same as Jack even tho the cap hit hurts

Available downgrades:
Talbot
Murray
Reimer
Allen (maybe)
Desmith
Comrie
What about Varly?

Their talk about running the tandem back sounds a lot more like conventional posturing then what Gibbers agent apparently said.

I want nothing to do with Murray and i mean nothing.. did we not just get burned on Mrazek? So yes, may as well go Woll and Kallgren and get something in season. There also must be another European free agent to take a swing at. My son is an Ottawa fan and i had to sit through more Murray games than a care to talk. Constantly discussing bad goals.. constant injuries.. Jack is our best bet because the best of Jack is better than most. We know what Murray will do and it will be well below league average.

Yeah possibly he'd possibly be an upgrade

I guess maybe lehner as well depending on how much he hates the knights

MONTREAL — As day two of the NHL draft opened and goaltenders started to be moved with abandon — Ville Husso to the Red Wings, Vitek Vanacek to the Devils — the mind wandered to the Islanders and Semyon Varlamov.

Varlamov played 32 games last season and takes a $5 million bite out of the team’s cap sheet. There is some question over the status of Ilya Sorokin, the Islanders’ presumptive starter, who is currently in Russia, per an Instagram post. Assuming he makes it back to North America, however, it will be his show in net. It’s easy to put the puzzle pieces together from there.

Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello, however, is holding steadfast to the goaltending tandem he has in place.

“That’s my feeling,” Lamoriello said on the draft floor moments after the seventh round wrapped. “I’ve said it from day one and I feel that way today.”

If you take him at his word, that eliminates one of the clearest moves dangling in front of the Islanders to get some money off the books that can be used for a forward when free agency opens next week.

If we get to July 13 and both Jack and Kuemper sign With other teams the rest of the league is going to try to absolutely dick us in every trade

Unfortunately for us the Blackhawks have no one useful in goal we can steal

My guess - the conversation basically starts with Dubas saying we value you as a tandem goalie and are prepared to pay you as such. its fine if Jack or another team thinks otherwise but the Leafs can't get into that bidding war.

Well that's a shame would've loved varly tbh.
