Honestly feel pretty good about this deadline. The Kraken deal was really solid, and not giving up a 1st for a washed player like Foligno is a win in itself. As has been stated, this team will live or die by the core - everything else is background noise.

While it’s disappointing not much happened today, ultimately I think leafs have little choice but to stick to who they have today and bank on them turning it around. If you think about it, most of their issues are because they have guys under performing- JT, Nylander, Campbell, Mrazek…if those guys perform to their potential, Leafs are capable of beating just about anyone. And I think the TSN panel said it this morning, leafs top guys need to be clutch playoff performers this year, if they do that - we beat anyone, if not it’s a 1st round exit again.

Must say I'm disappointed in today... especially when you see guys like Zach Sanford go for nothing, James Reimer being likely available, and Max Domi seemingly remaining in Columbus.

The Leafs don't have enough cap space to bring Muzzin back, but also have $2-3m left with Muzzin out. That $2-3m is a wasted opportunity.

Gonna be in Campbell we trust.

Just gotta hope he's the top 10 goalie in the league he was from when we acquired him from Feb. 2020 to mid-January this year and not the goalie from 10 of his last 13 starts.

Should have made yesterdays trade today to trick the simple minds who are disappointed by a lack of a deal today into thinking we made a huge upgrade.

We aren't making it past the 1st rd.

lol at least Dubas will be fired.
Seemed to be the sentiment in the beginning of the year/offseason but now it's defaulted back to it being totally OK if the Leafs shit the bed with another first round exit.

Yup. That’s the reality of the Leafs position and gamble. We go as far as Campbell takes us. I guess Leafs have confidence in him. I don’t but I hope I’m wrong.

I'm pretty happy with this deadline.

Retained our 1st, didn't trade any top prospect, and still improved the blueline, which was my top priority. If we have to pay premium assets for a top 6LW to supplement a 40m+ top 6, there is a fatal flaw here that will be addressed in the summer.

There is no point getting into a nuclear arms race with these Atlantic teams. Tampa has pressure to chase a 3-peat, Boston's cup winning core is about to turn to dust, and Florida has made this an all-in year selling their entire farm pre-Huberdeau contract.

The best course for this Leaf team is to come in as underdogs. Aside from Tampa, no other Atlantic team has a window as wide as TOR.

Blackwell is a very underrated grab who will provide similar depth insurance to Kase, who most love. Lyubushkin will have a Chiarot-lite impact for 1/2 the price. Don't forget the Knies option.

Similar approach to Carolina at this TDL. Re-assess the rest in the summer.

Don't know what Rakell went for... but missing out on Domi for that ubsurdly low price seems ridiculous.

They are into Muzzin's LTIR anyways.... the guy would have likely been a perfect fit on the LW of Tavares-Nylander as a reclamation project who we know can produce big numbers.

not really but I'm not as pissed as I would be if he hadn't gotten Giordano yesterday

on the other hand Dubas has arguably the worst goaltending in the NHL right now and didn't even try to fix it

because if he had tried he could have added somebody

I'm happy with the trades they made, but not happy with the trades they didn't make. Overall I'd say it was a pretty moderate deadline, and I can see why they decided not to do more

I really do wonder if Blackwell will join Tavares/Nylander?

He was on the Panarin/Strome line last season and has some pretty good splits with them:

Panarin/Strome without Blackwell last season:

TOI: 287:01
xGF%: 47.74
GF%: 50.11

Panarin/Strome/Blackwell:

TOI: 195:39
xGF%: 52.26
GF%: 72.44

It's on record that Panarin requested Blackwell over Kakko to play with him but eventually was overruled. (gotta give the 2nd overall playing time right?)

I think the goaltending issues are a little overblown. I'm not against us picking up another goalie, but I think the additions help. The Atlantic will be hard to get out of, but we knew that going in. The Leafs core needs to perform big in the playoffs and I think the top line breaks through this year. Marner might be playing the best hockey ever and Matthews is a beast.
I agree with the last pat of your post, but unfortunately reliable, very good to great goaltending, will be the determining factor. No matter how well our top 4 perform, regardless of how the D plays their best, Muzzin returns to form, Giordano proves to be the solidifying presence. Our bottom 6 outperform expectations, Blackwell rely strengthens the 3rd line - all of it will be thrown into the toilet or won't be possible, if they lose confidence in the goaltending. The team plays different when our goalies can't stop beachballs. It's so simple an analysis that hardcore HF people and talking heads on TV and radio reject it, but it's all going to come down to Jack, Kallgren and Petr. Anyone of the three catches fire and we're in for a great PO. If none of them can or aren't given the chance - then there's going to be a nuclear holocaust in the center of the universe.

What was the point of making a splash in the defense department but not getting an upgrade in goaltending or someone for the second line? You aren't getting past the first round with Campbell, he's been trash since December 1st. Like .875 to .880% since then and nearly 4 GAA. Kallgren isn't going to take the reigns and be their new number one.

So we still have Mrazek, Campbell and Kallgren as our goaltenders?

Second line still looks like shit.

Team is getting absolutely annihilated in the first round. You can't win a 7 game series with sub .900% goaltending and 4+ GAA, it's not happening... AT all.

To all the people whining about how they didn't upgrade their goaltending:

How many goalies out there were legit upgrades over what we currently have? Maybe just MAF? Would probably cost us a first since we don't have 2nds for a while. Or one of our Top 5 prospects? Is that really worth it?

Everyone else on the market is basically a lateral move and we're trading assets to get that? Or a very marginal upgrade? It's just not good asset management. It's not always about what you have, it's about what is out there that will improve what you have. If the answer is nothing, then I guess tough luck.

Better defense will help just as much. Gio's upgrade on the Top 4 is much more impactful overall than getting another Mrazek level goaltender.
