I would lay down the law and show Matthews, Marner and Nylander who's boss and give all 3 these respective extension offers and tell them that they have until draft day to either sign or they're getting traded.

Matthews - 12.5 million per. 8 years

Marner - 11 million per. 8 years

Nylander - 10 million per. 8 years.

And hire Boudreau as the coach. I would prefer Quennville. But for obvious reasons that ain't happening.

Let's see how bad the spoiled children want to keep the band together.

The draft is on the 28th and the clauses kick in on July 1st. That’s like holding 1 gun to their heads and another to your own.
If dealt, it’s critical to get the best possible return and clause restrictions don’t help with that.

Management inflicted wounds on themselves when they didn’t do that last time. Dubas is having a nervous breakdown because of those contracts and that failed strategy.

The up front money we can pay needs to be a bigger consideration for these agents, it’s a decided advantage to the player. Also, if these guys want to take us to the cleaners again, after failing repeatedly, then it says a lot. You really really want to win? Then give the team a fair deal that allows us to give you the support players that make a difference. f*** these guys and their salaries, Matthews leveraged going to UFA at 26 freaking years old, it’s time to show you want to win. You’ll never secure the side advertising money anywhere else either and these agents all know it.

Matthews and Marner don’t deserve raises and given the net negative Nylander brings to the other 100 feet of ice, same. Morgs took a fair deal, follow his lead.

I watched the Stars/Kraken game for 5 minutes and saw 40 goal man McCann and thought, why can Seattle pay their 40 goal man $5m and some want to pay ours $10m?? We can't win with these guys making all the money. It has been proven over and over again. Thank God they will move one of our proven playoff losers soon.

Something tells me Dubas is a wolf in sheep's clothing. To get to that level you have to be a prick and cut throat. If the rumour is true that he strong armed Shanny into making him the GM, I do not trust this guy.

Wow, what "punishment"! Way to lay down the LOL.

I thought you were going to say that if you were them, you'd kill yourself. Mikeyz mellowing out, nice!

Not only are your numbers off, but literally none of them can sign by the draft. It's literally not allowed lol.

If I were one of the best players in the world and my team came to me with an ultimatum framed like this I'd tell them to go pound sand.

Good luck getting any value for players demanding a trade with high AAV's. We'd essentially be giving them away at that point.

So in the end we lose our best players for very little in return, go from being a good team to a bad team and have to start a long rebuilding process with some missing draft picks and an average at best prospect pool. But hey, at least we looked tough and made a point as we were shooting ourselves in the foot!

This is meant to be serious, not glib: If I were Dubas and Shanahan, I'd be totally humbled by the failure of my vision. I'd be strongly inclined to resign from my position. I'd be frustrated (and maybe a bit angered) by those special players I defended repeatedly and stood by failing to elevate their performances beyond regular season level effort. I'd know it wouldn't be my place to implement the new vision due to the promises I had made to my superiors and the special players.

Marner would have to be traded for other reasons (upcoming NMC clause?) due to not being eligible to sign that contract this soon. Beyond that, I'm predicting that we'd retain Nylander while having to trade away Matthews under this scenario.

So your idea of showing them who's boss is giving them all raises? Your solution is to essentially run it back...

You can bash the players all you want, but apparently Matthews was willing to take a longer term but MLSE didn't want him and Marner needing extensions at the same time. If my boss is willing to throw a bunch of money at me, why would I say no? Most of these players don't even get involved in negotiations, their agents handle it for them, and many of them use the same agents. Obviously MLSE was too generous and the players and their agents gladly accepted. That's not on the players, that's on management.

I will say I didn't care one bit for Marner's tactics during negotiating. Having his dad whining publicly for him is f***ing embarrassing.

The official signing date for those contracts would be July 1st 2023 for AM and WN and Marner could not re-sign until July 1st 2024.

However those #'s are scary on contract extension alone and what makes matters even worse with Dubas as GM those numbers are likely too low, with perhaps only Nylander deal being an overpayment.

You have Tavares for 2 more years at $11 mil on the books also to factor in here, because his deal will overlap when Matthews and Nylander extension kick in in 2024-25 season.

We can't sign anyone to an extension by the draft. Marner isn't eligible for an extension until next year, he has 2 years left on his deal.

Good player evaluation.

You make a excellent point, it’s not on the player to not get overpaid, it’s on the GM. Hav said that the player has the obligation to live up to said contract. Jeff Finger says hi……….

Their cap hit isn't the issue, it's the fact that they're all collectively and individually, massive p***yes. One of them has to go in order to bring in a power forward and a top 4 dman.
I agree with you. I am saying that Matthews and Marner would probably reject the deals I would offer as it would look like a low ball.
