If a best on best tournament was played right now, what would be your predictions/power ranknings?

Canada is the slight fav
Best paper roster is US
Sweden has no weaknesses
Finn's have sisu and would finally have their best ever generation together for a tournament

Big gap

Czechs could beat anyone above but could not maintain the upset and would not be a threat for gold. All we could do is ruin someone else's chances before losing the next game.

It'd be an all NHL roster with 3 good NHL goalies and some nice forward pieces and combos. D is weak!

Gap

All capable of an upset... No gold contenders either.

I'd love to see all the NHL Swiss guys on one team while Josi is still on top of his game

I'd love to see the Germans altogether while grubauer is on top.

Finns have sisu
Don't believe that old myth. We have nothing of such kind ;)

Seriously, of course Canada would be a favourite to win such a tournament, but if they were to face Finland in the final, for example, I certainly wouldn't bet against the Finns. In recent years it looks like Finland has more often than not managed to find a way to win close games. I think they/we would be ready and able to do that also in (senior) best on best competition.

Totally agree... no one in the Big 5 winning a best on best is an upset. Finn's haven't had a crack at a real best on best with this new generation and that sucks!

1. CAN
2. USA
3. SWE
4. FIN
6. CZE
7. GER
8. SUI

Finland's D-core is trash outside Heiskanen. Have to put Sweden above.

Are you a Finland joke - no sisu?!

We are way more, more evil, evil than even Ukraine.

And Russia know it. They do. They sure do.

Finland centers and wingers can do the business and the goalies too.
The backbone would be of Dallas chaps only and completed with Mikko Lehtonen. Easy the best of the European lot.
And then the new N.Y-Ranger Mikkola. To round it up.

That's enough to kick ... to kill.

NHL.

I think Canada is the strongest team and most will agree on that. In the absence of Russia, the second to fourth place order is interchangeable.
The Czech Republic would be fifth, although the loss of Voráček is very noticeable and some other players have problems both in defense and in attack.
In my opinion, Switzerland is practically at the level of the Czech Republic and stronger than Germany and especially Slovakia. Slovakia has nice prospects, but right now Switzerland is clearly the better team on paper.

Let’s take a moment and mull over the fact Ra posted an almost reasonable opinion on where the Swedish team projects.
I'm still in shock, did someone hack his account?

I hate these threads because they are depressing. It just reminds me that we will not be seeing a true tournament like this anymore

There is enough elite hockey to watch, just look at the last WJHC tournament that was exciting.

There are only 5 Canadians in the top 20 in NHL scoring. It's not bad, but they aren't the auto-locks to win like they used to be. Right now, they are heavily reliant on how good McDavid is.

A lot of that has to do with injuries this season to the likes of Makar, MacKinnon amongst a few others and funnily enough, the #1 pick in this year's draft happens to be a Canadian who a lot of people think projects around the same level as McDavid.

yeah but I don't think Bedard would get picked for the team if it happened today, part of that is politics.

Of course Forwards wouldn't be Canada's big issue, their biggest issue is their goalies are atrocious. They would need to have a massive puck possession edge to feel comfortable which isn't the same guarantee it used to be, and then every time the other good countries come down, Canadian fans would be holding their breath.

The Czechs really stepped up in Russia’s absence this year. But I wouldn't expect this every tournament. It was a bit of an anomaly.

Hockey is a small global sport. The absence of just 1 top team really thins the competition.
But it is what it is.

1. Canada 2. Finland 3. USA

Finland's been taking medals with team half this good, superior playstyle and players who know/play it by heart. Canada is just too good with their material though.

Who would be the more prominent player for Team Sweden - Elias Pettersson or Rasmus Dahlin?
