Not in Quebec city, which was the point I was answering (I know my post was confusing as I forgot the city part of Quebec city).

Quebec city is the region of the province of Quebec where french speaking people are most opposed to the idea of soverignty. 70% of french speaking people in Quebec city are against a sovereign Quebec. Most hockey fans living there don't care about Team Quebec and would prefer to cheer for Team Canada, so assuming that a Team Quebec would increase Gary Bettman's popularity in Quebec city is entirely wrong.

QC is the place in the Province that is the least positive toward Sovereinty. But that just means the place is almost cut down the middle but not quite, maybe at 49-51 against. I worked at the last Referendum and it was just around that number. So that's still a lot of people that would root for Team Quebec. Plus you can add people that won't vote for Separation but would still root for Quebec.

That being said, the World Cup is not that important, it's not the Olympics. Having a Team Quebec would not be a political statement. It's just this fun little thing like Team North America and Team Europe. In the far more important World Cup of Soccer/Football, the UK is split in a bunch of teams like Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, right. And it's not the End of the World.

Just for fun I made some USA teams. Players are assigned based on where they spent the most time playing before CHL/USHL.

* It would handicap Canada who are almost too dominant to make it interesting.

* Quebec is a real place with a real identity that is different from the rest of Canada and would have a natural base of supporters.

* Unlike U-23 it wouldn't weaken team USA, a country that will need all their best players in order to compete.

* If the format is changed so that all teams get at least one home game in the tournament, then there's one more team playing at home in North America.

* England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales having their own teams in soccer sets a precedent that it can work just fine to have your own team even if you don't have political independence.

* Quebec was close the voting for independence and might very well actually become independent one day, so the NHL would be ahead of the curve.

* Gary Bettman would maybe become slightly less hated in Quebec City.

I hope we break of from quebec and block all trade routes.

In 2016, Quebec is still part of Canada. So... nah.

Let them separate and call themselves whatever they want. Then we can revisit such a topic.

Perhaps Canada is so dominant in hockey because it's the one sport that has national acclaim here. How many football, basketball or baseball teams do we have? How many Canadians play on the American teams?

Exactly.

If your guys show up you should at least get a basketball medal over the next three Olympics.

How about a team the fans vote on? I want to see John Scott at the World Cup.

Split Canada into 2 teams. East and West. Eastern Canada would be Quebec and Maritimes. Western Canada would be Ontario and the Prairies. It's just a dumb gimmick tournament anyways.

So BC isn't part of Canada now?

Team Quebec? ok can't people see this is a PQ plot again.
Team Quebec would wear the Quebec flag, the national anthem would be WHAT? adding fuel to the PQ party. This would turn into a complete political ploy. If you get a Quebec team then flags and PQ ideals would win BIG, If Quebec is refused a team, " once again Quebec is humiliated by ENGLISH CANADA proving that Canada is a foreign country holding Quebec people in a near concentration camp third world province of Canada. PQ win even BIGGER for the struggle for separation.
Whole thing a BAD IDEA...

How can mods ask for no politics, and keep crap like that, while deleting the only post on the subject using facts rather than speculation? :help:

What needs to be done if this is ever going to be successful again:

1) Rename the tournament "Canada Cup".
2) Go back to 6 teams (sorry Slovakia, the partition of Czechoslovakia screwed you up).
3) Use the Canada Cup -87 round robin system and put the Sweden-Finland and Russia-Czech Republic games in Europe before going over seas.
4) Permanently dissolve NHL participation in the Olympics.

Switzerland, Germany, Latvia and Slovakia... I'm sorry. You'll have to do with the World Championships...
