OT: Hurricanes Lounge XLV: Y2K Twenty-Four Years Later

Wife and daughter staying at her mom's, I'm staying at the house with the dogs. I don't expect it to be too bad here far as damage. Though my 2.5 acres is 2 acres of trees in a flood plane

Days like today I get really frustrated when I see ranch-style homes being down for 10-15 mini-manshions on the same lot. Concrete does not absorb water.

While true, there's no absorbing this type of rain when the ground is already saturated like is and 10-20" of rain arrive in 24 hours. Even in my yard in Durham, with all the rain we've had before this, it's like walking on a sponge as there's so much water already in the ground. The little bit of good news for Asheville, is the water flows out quickly due to the terrain.

This is a walking trail near my house. It's prone to flooding but I've never seen the creek reach the bridge before. Normal days the creek and bridge are separated by about 10-15 feet

Their dam failed, so has Mountain Island in Mount Holly off of the Catwaba.

Gastonia is hit or miss on power, I don't think I'll have mine back till Monday or so

Just dropping in to say I hope everyone here and their families stayed safe. I live in Nashville and was here during the 2010 flood which was one of the worst weather events I've experienced, and I've lived through several hurricanes. I think Asheville and the surrounding areas are even worse off than that from what I've seen so far. Some places pretty much wiped off the map. Just devastating.

I lived in Asheville for about 6 years about 20 years ago. Watched most of the 06 playoffs and all of the 09 playoffs there. a bunch of people I knew then still live there. It’s been surreal seeing places I recognize underwater, and even though I know there’s no cell service I’ve reached out to several of those folks. Hope all of y’all are doing ok as well

Got word my wifes aunt outside of Banner Elk is OK. They are isolated, trapped on the mountain, but good. National Guard is working to get them water

Quite ironically, water is the primary challenge right now, it seems. My brother (in downtown asheville) filled his bathtub pre-storm, and has been working off of that, and apparently there's somebody nearby who has a well that they're letting people use.

It’s so heartbreaking y’all. So terrifying to have no way to check on family and friends for days as the phone service went out first. Then the power and water. The devastation to so many people with so many beautiful places forever changed.

My parents’ home suffered some tree damage but they escaped. I had to bring them to Winston Salem today as they’re having respiratory issues and I wanted them to be near a working hospital.

We filled the tubs also, since we are on a well.
