Proposal: How would you fix the Powerplay?

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
Leafs Powerplay is now 32nd out of 32 teams, the only team below 8%.

How would you fix the PP?
Give 13m contract for Marner the playmaker god who should be running the best PP in the league. Long term extension to Savard...

And trust the plan.

It will sort itself out. Will finish 10th-15th in reg season

And be bottom 5 in playoffs if we play Bos, Flo and top 5 if we play tampa for R1

The players are what they are. Can't change the flaws in Rielly, Marner, Tavares, Matthews, Nylanders games which hurts ability to have a dynamic PP for the playoffs vs tough defensive teams

You can't fix a powerplay if the players suck.

That’s how you fix it… change the players. The core gets complacent because they’re the unit regardless of performance. Fabricate some competition to drive performance.

Make two units and the one that’s playing better gets more starts. Some of these guys may not care about winning, but they definitely care about scoring, and they need PP time to maximize that.

Matthews-Nylander-Rielly-Domi-McMann

Vs

Tavares-Marner-OEL-Knies-Pacioretty

leave the best players on for the full 2 minutes and let them work their way out of this funk. Letting less talented players grind out some powerplay goals here and there is not a longterm solution.

We need more shooting threats on PP1. Rielly and Marner need to be off PP1. These two are great players they are just soft spots on the pp/just cycle the puck around no threat to shoot or score.

I'd swap Mitch with Robertson and Rielly with Connor Timmins (he can slapshot a puck) I know that sounds crazy but we need to work with what we've got. Or just drop the dman and go 5 forwards.

OEL - Matthews - Nylander - Domi - Knies

Rielly - Marner - Robertson/McMann - Pacioretty - Tavares

Those would be my two units.

doesn't sound crazy at all. Timmins is quietly pretty slick. But can he shoot? You said you want shooters

Systems are about roles and execution. The best players aren’t good at all the required roles and their complacency has led to poor execution.

They've already taken the important step in breaking up PP1. When things aren't working, and it's a PP that has been together A LONG TIME, you need to disrupt things. Next thing is bringing in the players that do the things you want to see done. We need net presence and dirty goals sometimes.

I'd break up all the 'familiarity' I can, to help push a simpler approach.

PP1: Matthews, Nylander, Domi, Knies, OEL
PP2: Tavares, Marner, Pacioretty, McMann/Robertson, Rielly

Prioritize the unit that is generating more.

Let OEL clap bombs from the point and let JT, Matthews, Patches, Knies head to the front of the net for tips & rebounds.

Shoot. The. Puck.

The Leafs hang on to the puck way too long. A quick pass or two without any dumb curl backs or useless fakes and then shoot and crash the net. It has never been complicated.

Send 4 players onto the ice instead of 5 whenever they have a power play, Or if they send out 5, make the 5th guy stays behind our blue line the whole time, lol.
;)

You almost have to put a ban on all the useless skating and movement and just force the PP to set up a smaller perimeter. The gaps in the spacing look too wide and the puck movement is so sluggish and there's no threat from distance.
