How to improve the PP?

Everyone knows this is the biggest detriment to our team. I say we go with the same strategy we did with Jagr under Renney. Nash scores the majority of his goals down low and the off wing dot much like Jagr used to. Nash on the off wing dot, Stepan on the other side, cally in front with Richards/Brassard's job getting the puck to Nash in his sweet spot much like Nylander did for Jags

Unfortunately Richards and Stepan don't have the same ability to hold onto the puck and slow down the game at will, the way Nylander did.

This sounds exactly like our system from last year. And Nash is no Jagr on the PP. He's frankly just no good on the halfboards or near the circles. He's good around the net.

Step 1: Get this man away from it.

Word on the street is he's screaming, "GET THE PUCK TO BEAVER!"

havent seen one of these threads in a while...

im cautiously optimistic that the PP will improve under the new coach. i mean, it cant get much worse, right? as long as he sticks to his mantra of "safe is death" we should be fine.

oh wait... :sarcasm:

I'd try the umbrella and see how that works. Tell Richards to let it fly when he has an open lane from the top of the umbrella. I'd start out with something like

Callahan
Stepan
Nash
Del Zotto
Richards

And

Boyle
Zuccarello
Stralman
Brassard
Moore

Hopefully, everyone works on their shooting.

That means seeing quicker releases and slapshots instead of wristers from the blue line.

..Oh, and none of that ********* where we have set up, yet, someone is standing behind the net.

One timers, one timers, one timers.

Stralman needs to be a fixture on the left point on our power play. He's the only righty on the team that can really fire it.

I expect AV to use Stralman like he used Salo in Vancouver.

DG beat me to it. One timers, one timers, one timers.

I've been complaining that no one on this team is capable of taking a one-timer. Every team has someone who can take one timers but for some god damn reason, no one on our team takes them. Hockey is a game of inches and seconds the way it's played nowadays. For some reason we refuse to do that and instead, we take a few extra seconds to look around AFTER the opportunity is already gone and then we squander the puck away.

I am expecting we will see something like:

Cally - Stepan - Nash
Stralman - Richards

Poillot/Kreider/Boyle - Brassard - Zuccarello
MDZ - Moore

Not too optimistic right now...
Could of used Clowe on that 2nd unit - but the price was truly insane and walking away was the only way to go

however, power plays is more the what instead of the who. Colorado had the personnel to succeed with EJ, Duchene, Landeskog, ROR, PAP, etc. and they had one of the worst PP in the league and aside from the numbers and stats, it was simply horrid. Worse than ours most of the time. When they did score, it was mostly due to the talent of individual players.

At the end of the day, if we have the right set up going and the right personnel in the right roles, even what we have there can be a top 10 power play in the league.

Yeah, Richards is world class on the PP, but on the point and not down low.

Yeah, also, part of the problem is puck movement.

PKs in the NHL is really good these days. Everyone plays the exact same way (besides D coverege). You put pressure on the puck and overloads when you get a step.

What does overloading means? You play 5 on 4. 3 guys on one side of the ice, 2 on the other side. When you overload you more or less go 4 PKers on the side the other team had 3 PPers. Instead of a 5 on 4 you get a 3 on 4.

As soon as you make one not perfect pass on the PP, you get 4 PKers launching at you. THAT put a lot of pressure on the PPers ability to move the puck. Look at the players on the better PPs in the league. Guys like Briere, Giroux and Timmonen are excellent, really really good, at moving the puck around.

We do not have that puckmoving ability. Gabby was too stupid. Nash is 6'4, and have never had talent around him in CBJ. He is better in the behind/infront of the net role, not he playmaking role on the side boards. He can be pressured.

MDZ is a decent point men for sure, but he is not an option for BR because he is a left shot. Stepan is 2 pass away from Richards.

Zucc and or Brassard are new in NY, and should be options to help Richards, if one of them play in the playmaking role along the half boards. The problem is that we still wouldn't have that right shot on the left point.

We need to get a right handed PPQB.

This was going to be one of the points of my post. We're never a threat to shoot on the PP.

And unfortunately Nash isn't that likely to take a run at the scoring title like Nash. Somewhat similar in style--Jagr in his prime and a bit past his prime (when he was with the Rangers) was quite a bigger scoring threat than Rick Nash (or Gaborik for that matter).

I agree with most of this. When both Callahan and Nash are out there--Callahan is doing the job that Nash should be doing. Step and Zucc are more create players than finishers and the point men are constantly changing because nobody is really that good at it. Basically I think the personnel we have to use are dysfunctional with each other. Kreider might be useful with his size and speed and ability to cover territory but first he's got to get his head out of his ass. Del Zotto actually can move the puck around--the problem with him is that everybody knows that is always his first option--his shot being average at best and the accuracy of that shot less than average.

When the Rangers pwp was really good during the Jagr years--Jagr took charge and he had a laser of a shot but was capable of putting the puck in the net in a variety of ways including bulling his way to the front. Nylander for all the *****ing people did about him was extremely patient with the puck but at the same time extremely creative and Straka had tons of speed and hustle and a very underrated skill set. The individual players all added something different to the mix. Rozsival was always kind of a weak link to me from the point but playing on the same side as Jagr that kind of mitigated that a little. He did a bit too much thinking and not reacting quickly enough at times and he had a good shot but was reluctant to use it.

Anyway I would like to see McDonagh get more of a shot at it. In terms of smarts he's light years ahead of Del Zotto. And personally if I had my way Richards would have walked the plank that's if he survived being keelhauled first. I don't really want to even talk about that mf'er.

I would've run an umbrella setup looking like:

...............(Net)
....... Callahan Nash

... Stepan.............McDonagh

..............Brassard

as the 1st unit, and the 2nd unit:

...............(Net)
....... Pouliot Kreider/Boyle

... Stralman.............Del Zotto

..............Zuccarello/Richards

It's a mentality issue, not a personnel issue. Teams that have success on the power play have a positive attitude. The Rangers go out there and try not to make a mistake for two minutes.

When Quinnipiac struggled on the power play in years past, they adopted an umbrella.

They put three guys across the point. One central defender with decent vision and a big shot, and two mobile forwards on either side. They then put two big boys in front of the net.

The key was communication. The point men would rotate the puck around. The opposite umbrella forward would try to sneak down the boards when the puck was away from him. The two forwards near the net would spread to the boards if they wanted to move the puck down low and keep the defense honest, but would immediately collapse on the net when they felt a shot was going to be taken. Here is how this would stack up in the NYR personnel.

First unit

Zuccarello-Moore-Nash

Callahan Boyle
(Net)

Second unit

Del Zotto-Richards-Stepan

Pouliot, Player B
(Net)

Kris man, we are on the same wavelength.

One of my main tactical gripes with Torts and Sullivan was that they never put our point men in position to shoot. They always had righty shots on the right point and lefty shots on the left point. Never made any sense to me on the PP.

Yes, but that's on the players as well. They need to rotate to put themselves on their off sides. Our PP is very stagnant.

Can't believe people are voluntarily putting Boyle on the PP. I'd rather have Pyatt at the net, and I hate Pyatt.

If you're a right handed shot and your coach tells you that you're playing the right point why is it your responsibility to correct his mistake? After reading everything we've read about Torts I'm sure if someone did that they'd be on the bench and their career on the Rangers PP would be over. That's on the coach.

Moore at the point in an Umbrella. Callahan on the left wing, Nash on the right (both close to the net) Boyle in front. Stepan also on the left wing, but further up so he can shoot or pass from his spot.

Richards, MZA, Brassard at forward, Stralman and DZ at the points. More of a creative unit for when just screening and going for rebounds isn't working. Could also run Nash out on this unit for Richards.

The not so definitive plan to improve the New York Rangers power play:

  1. Fundamentals, need I say more?
  2. Faceoffs, faceoffs, faceoffs!
  3. Shoot quickly and accurately on goal
  4. Practice under pressure
  5. Movement of bodies and that disc of vulcanized rubber

If at least one PP goal is scored, then it needs more work. :teach: :sarcasm:
