How popular are the Stars in Dallas?

As a Jets fan in a neck and neck race for first in the central with Dallas I have been watching their game highlights more regularly and I got to thinking just how much they matter in their market. It's certainly large enough and the Stars are usually competitive. Their arena tonight had a lot of energy to it. Would be really interesting to hear from Texans where the Stars rank in the area's sports pecking order. Thanks

As a non-Texan Stars fan (so anyone from Texas please correct me), it seems like the Stars are a high-end 3rd-4th ranked team (Cowboys, Rangers, Mavericks take precedent), but being such a sports-centric city, its still has a dedicated and deep fan-base. As long as the team remains competitive, the fans seem to be pretty loyal and active, but there has been feeling of 'mediocrity' lingering over the team for the last 15 years, which has limited the overall hype. But in the years we have been good, the hype has been there as well. Anyone remember the round 1 streamers haha...

It isn't far from Dallas in particular. If you're from Dallas and went to college in Oklahoma, its not out of the question alot of people from North Texas go to Oklahoma.

Similar to people in Western PA who went to West Virginia.
Ok...I am learning tonight..that US college sports have there own unique dynamic. So far, it appears the Stars, albeit at the bottom of the local rankings, are more of a reflection of what sounds to be a thriving sports scene overall than with any particular flaws with their own franchise. Oh and another thing..thank so so much for your old coach...we owe you. Not a playoff round maybe, but beers for sure.

Tonight's game vs. Anaheim on a Monday night was a non-sellout.

18,100+ out of 18,545.

But that's pretty good against Anaheim on a Monday.

This year and last, many or most games are sellouts; and those that don't sell out are very, very close, usually 18,100 or 18,200 or so, even weeknights. I don't think they've dropped below 18,000 this year, but if so, not one game under 17,600 or so. I follow all teams' attendance closely.

At least they're not lying about a sellout when they might when it's so close at 18,100 or so. Rangers had only 17,100 of 18,200 vs. Calgary tonight in comparison.

In those dismal years with a bad owner and team, very few sellouts and several 9,000 to 11,000 games, especially weeknights. I couldn't stand watching on tv as those light-grey empty seats were an eyesore.

The NBA Mavericks get between 19,200 and 20,000 plus where capacity is 19,200 or so according to ESPN. I think they have the current NBA and NHL record for consecutive sellouts, maybe since 2008 or so. And Kyrie Irving landing there yesterday makes them even more likely for a championship this spring, further widening the gap between them and the Stars. Unfortunately, the Stars will get drowned out by the Mavs in local buzz in the playoffs this spring more than ever.

But in the 1999 Cup year era, I think the Stars had a sellout streak of a few years of 17,100 or so at Dr. Pepper Arena while the Mavs were bad and regularly drew less than the Stars, believe it or not.

I'm a Pens fan, I don't think we're owed anything but thank you though

Everybody loves a winner, so not that much of a surprise. Although Doncic is such a dynamic force I see why the Mavs are dominating in sellouts. This is why the NHL , imo, needs to end the season earlier as going up against the powerful NBA is so tough.

What is it specifically about the Sooners tho?
Not a Dallas local, but OU is a pretty common school for people from the metroplex to go to, and they've always recruited strongly out the Metroplex/Northern Texas. Red River Shootout is played yearly in Dallas between Texas and OU. Dallas is a hub for that region, so you'll often see grads from all over the Big 12 and now a couple SEC teams (A&M, soon Texas and OU). I'm sure you'll also run into TCU, SMU, Baylor, Oklahoma St, and even Arkansas (old SWC) grads with some regularity. Having gone through Texas on a trip a couple years ago, College football there is nuts. From San Antonio to Fort Worth I saw like 5 massive football stadiums (Alamodome, DKR, Baylor, Cowboys Stadium, and TCU).
College sports are huge all across the US and probably ahead of the NHL in all cities. I'm not a college fan so I don't get it but that's the reality.
I think college football is big for gambling and interest in the North East, but outside of College Hockey in New England, and Syracuse/Uconn/St. Johns for basketball, I've never got the impression it's a huge deal in the Boston to DC corridor. Like, the Rangers, Bruins, Flyers and Capitals I would think are more popular than than any college team. But, obviously in place like Columbus, tOSU football is a way bigger deal than the Jackets.

Being originally from PA I agree there but ....now living in Florida, the South is huge with college. I'd argue Florida State and Florida U draw more interest and popularity than any pro Florida team in any sport.

Just a comment on the US college sports, Texas is like the place for football in the entire USA so it must be even extra important. I was in Oregon five years ago and the impact of the Oregon Ducks and Oregon state beavers was huge. Far more college jerseys there and hats, merchandise than anything to do with the Portland Trailblazers.

In Canada university/college is pure utility. You go to school for better job prospects. when the average Canadian graduates and leave they most likely will never set foot back into that building again. And no-one would ever donate any significant amount of money to an alumni. That would be regarded as odd and a complete waste of money.

In Dallas itself, probably last. Easily behind the Cowboys and probably the Rangers and Mavs as well.

But ironically they might have the largest support state wide as they are effectively the Texas hockey team. All other Dallas area teams have at least one competitor in the state.

Now let me throw out this for discussion. Say Houston gets a team, how does that affect the popularity of hockey in Dallas?

Oh, college football is nuts in certain regions, even among non-alumni. Hell, the new Atlanta NFL arena, has a Chick-Fil-A despite them being closed on Sundays due to college games that occasionally get played there. Since it's filled with transplants from throughout the South who went to SEC schools the passion runs high there.

Also, in my experience, I don't think Buffalo would qualify either, as the SUNY system doesn't really have D1 teams, and Buffalo is a group of 5 team. But, if you are talking places like Raleigh, Columbus, Florida, Dallas, and possibly even LA when it comes to UCLA and USC.

Like, I have no idea on who the most popular team for college football would be in New York City. My guess would be ND as they have a massive catholic fan base nationwide, but I doubt it's more popular than the Rangers. It's probably a byproduct of the North East being dominated by older institutions (aka the Ivey league, small colleges, and big private Universities that aren't big on football like Georgetown, NYU, etc.) that didn't have football traditions, and Rutgers is generally one of the worst Power 5 schools that is also a flagship state school. Everywhere else in the country pretty much has big state schools with huge athletic programs if they are in a populated state and is often the desired choice within the state for people to go to.

I think you're right with ND and NY. ND is also popular in PA if you don't like PSU, Pitt or Ohio State. I mentioned before about Western PA (particularly South West PA) people opting for WVU. Ohio State is close enough where you get a mix.

The Cowboys are obviously in another tier from all the other pro teams, and I do agree that the Mavericks are probably a safe 2nd. But I'm surprised the Rangers are ranked ahead of the Stars. I've seen plenty of their games since the Mariners are my favorite AL team, and they never struck me as having a hardcore fanbase.

As a local, here's the answer:

Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Mavericks
Texas Rangers
Texas Longhorns
Oklahoma Sooners
Dallas Stars
FC Dallas
I'll obviously defer to you more as a local, but once you add college sports in, I'd think the Longhorns would be 2nd for how huge college sports are there. Not as big as the Cowboys since there's more college teams, but the only team I'd think could even be in the same tier. And the Rangers being more popular than the Longhorns is something I can't even fathom. as college football seems to be far bigger than pro baseball in Dallas. Would be curious to know what I'm missing.

I don't think any pro team in Florida is even close to the tier of the Gators and Seminoles. Maybe in their city itself, but statewide it's these 2 by a mile.
